In 1871, Unwins, the printers, moved out of London to set up works near the gunpowder site. Their workers lodged with the locals and became part of the village scene. The director George Unwin was a philanthropic gentleman who ran science and art classes for the workers in the Gresham (or Greshambury) Institute. A disastrous fire in 1895 totally destroyed the works, and the company moved to Woking.
The Gresham Institute was donated by George Unwin, and became St Thomas’ Church. St Thomas, Chilworth (also described as being in Shalford Hamlet) was dedicated in 1892 as a mission chapel for Shalford parish. The present building dates from 1896 and was built by W H Seth-Smith as the Greshambury Institute (see Nairn and Pevsner, The Buildings of England, Surrey, 1971). The church was licensed for baptisms from 1928 and for marriages from 1964.
