Dictionaries define the word 'refreshing' as the act of giving new strength or energy. It can also be used to describe something that reinvigorates either the body or mind.
The sense of refreshment is widely interpreted. What revives and restores one person may not have the same affect on others. It seems 'refreshing' is a matter of personal preference and that no universally agreed-upon definition exists.
If we believe the marketing departments of large corporations, consuming certain food and drink products will produce a state of refreshment. In fact, the term refreshment itself has come to mean “a light snack or drink provided in a public place or at a public event”.
Drinks
A cold drink can not only quench your thirst but can reinvigorate the body. Hydration is important to avoid heat exhaustion and reduce the likelihood of muscle cramps. Try drinking a large glass of ice water or a tall glass of lemondade after an exhausting activity.
Companies often use images and phrases designed to suggest that their product will both cool and restore the body. Derivations of the word 'refreshing' have appeared prominently in the marketing campaigns and advertising slogans of one major drink company throughout the years:

Foods
Certain foods are firmly associated with refreshment. Citrus fruits like lemons, limes and oranges are often served in light, refreshing deserts (Key Lime Pie is a favorite in my household). Maybe you've enjoyed a slice of watermelon at a picnic or a crisp apple out on the trail? How about a celebratory ice cream cone after a little league game or an Italian Ice or Turbo Rocket popsicle when the ice cream truck rolls into your neighborhood? Candy manufacturers get in on the action as well with offerings of Starburst and Mentos which claim to both energize and refresh. Activity
Sources of refreshment are not limited to the consumption of food and drink. Getting sleep is the most basic way of refreshing the body. A nap or restful night's sleep allows you to wake refreshed and primed to tackle the day. Many find that exercising can reduce stress and helps promote a more healthy and balanced life. 
Some enjoy hiking in the woods or just taking the dog for a walk around the block. Others enjoy diving into a cold swimming pool in the heat of summer or taking a hot shower to melt away the worries of a stressful day. Maybe all you need is a comfy chair and a book to read.
For some, vacations provide a necessary escape from the grind of daily life and allow both the body and mind to reach a more restful state. Some enjoy taking trips to the beach, while others find a cabin nestled in the woods more ideal. But you don’t need to venture far from home to find a refreshing respite. Why not simply relax under a shade tree and watch the sunset or just have a conversation with a good friend?
