Geocache Description:

Church of All Saints, Sutton Benger

The church can easily be found on the High Street at the junction with Seagry Road.
There has been a church here since the 12th century. It was named St Leonards before the 17th century.

The church has varying architectural styles and is graded 2*. The nave and chancel are 13th century. The south aisle was a 14th century addition made of rough stone with pointed windows. The north wall has smooth dressed stone and flat headed windows. The pinnacled tower was added in the 15th century and the porch and vestry were a further addition sometime during the 16th century.
The Hawthorn King British green men perhaps one of the great works of art of Western Europe, this is probably the best-known of all English green men. The stone-carver who created him was a master of his craft. Yet we do not find this stunning green man in a cathedral, or even a large parish church, but in this small village church. As you enter the church the green man can be seen ahead and to the left, at the west end of the south aisle, supporting the arch of the colonnade. Set against the simplicity of the bare white wall, the rich carving is quite amazing. The carving shows branches emerging from the mouth up into his crown with leaves, berries, and, uniquely, birds feasting on the berries. The carving dates apparently from the 13th century. Congrats to Gralorn FTF
