O Açucareiro. É assim chamada pelos marienses a edificação centrada numa pequena rotunda a meio caminho entre Vila do Porto e o Aeroporto. A origem do nome deve-se à semelhança arquitetónica desta edificação com a forma dos tradicionais e clássicos açucareiros de porcelana, mantendo-se até aos dias de hoje esse nome.
O Açucareiro é na realidade um marco histórico que perdura desde os tempos áureos da história recente de Santa Maria e da importância do Aeroporto Internacional que teve origem com a construção de uma base militar dos EUA por altura da 2ª Guerra Mundial como base de apoio no meio do atlântico. O aeroporto compreendia cerca de 10% da área da Ilha, situado na zona mais plana, totalmente vedada, constituindo assim um “mundo aparte” da realidade mariense. Era um “território” totalmente autónomo com comercio; instalações industriais; recreativas; de laser; de culto, padaria, e um conjunto de “leis” próprias reservadas áquela parcela da ilha. Inclusivamente, dispunha de um corpo de guarda próprio… enfim, uma outra realidade!
Santa maria por essa altura, chegou a ter 15000 habitantes, em parte originado pelo surto de migração de outras ilhas, atraídos pelas oportunidades de trabalho entretanto criadas, e também por muitos portugueses do continente em comissão de serviço para os serviços aeroportuários e ligados ao controlo de tráfego aéreo e também de centenas de estrangeiros, pertencentes a companhias multinacionais que aqui prestavam serviços de apoio à aviação. Vivia-se em Santa Maria um ambiente cosmopolita só comparável às grandes metrópoles; era a época do glamour da aviação mundial, e Santa Maria estava no epicentro entre a América e a Europa. Chamavam-lhe por isso a “América Pequenina”.
O Açucareiro era por isso um posto de controlo entre o Aeroporto e o resto da Ilha e também a sua fronteira. Era no açucareiro que se mantinha um guarda (policia) 24 horas, sete dias por semana.
A entrada no Aeroporto fazia-se pelo açucareiro, só o podendo fazer quem para tal estivesse autorizado pela direção, onde o seu Diretor era quem “ditava” a “lei”, assumindo-se como um “todo poderoso”.
Foram sem dúvida tempos de glória para quem ali teve o privilégio de viver contrastando com a vivência do resto da ilha.
O Açucareiro é em si um marco das diferenças entre os que viviam “lá dentro” e os outros que viviam “cá fora”, sonhando com o que lá se passava

Açucareiro (The Sugar Bowl). It is the name given by the people of Santa Maria the building centered on a small rouabout halfway between Vila do Porto and the Airport. The origin of the name is due to the similarity of this architectural building in the shape of traditional and classic porcelain sugar bowls, keeping up to that name today.
The Sugar Bowl is actually a historical landmark that has existed since the heydays of the recent history of Santa Maria and the importance of the airport which originated with the construction of a U.S. military base at the time of World War 2 as a support in the middle the Atlantic. The airport comprised about 10% of the area of the island, situated in the most flat, fully fenced, making it a "world apart" from reality of Santa Maria. It was a "territory" fully autonomous with trade; industrial facilities; recreational, laser; worship, bakery, and a set of "laws" themselves aside that portion of the island. Even had a body guard himself ... well, another reality!
Santa maria by then, having reached 15,000 inhabitants, partly caused by the surge in migration from other islands, attracted by the job opportunities created however, and also many Portuguese mainland on commission for services airport and connected to the control air traffic as well as hundreds of foreigners, belonging to multinational companies here were providing support services to aviation.
