A sua construção teve início em 1942, com um orçamento de 231.632$81.Começou a funcionar 4 anos depois a 21 de Julho de 1946, tendo sido eletrificado com energia da rede pública apenas em 1993.
A sua torre quadrangular branca tem 19 m de altura, situando-se o plano focal a 29 m de altitude, sendo seu alcance de 24 milhas.
Este edifício e seus anexos encontram-se dentro da área de Paisagem Protegida de Interesse Regional da ilha do Pico.
Neste momento este farol é guarnecido por 2 faroleiros.
