Geocache Description:

A tranquil spot not far from the busy A48 trunk road.

This tiny parish church was almost entirely rebuilt in1880 by a Walter Evill of Chepstow on the much older site of a monks cell. It's original allegiance was to the Priory of St Mary's in Chepstow rather than the grander Tintern Abbey. The church has an atmosphere of peace and solitude. The holdings were known as Monktown now the hamlet of Mounton and are set in a valley beside a stream called the Meurig but now better known as Mounton Brook. St Andoenus has been identified by some as an obscure Greek saint and by others with St Owen. It has also been suggested that he was initially a 7th century French scribe who became Bishop of Rouen and chancellor to three French monarchs one of them an Anglo Saxon woman. The parish logo bears a scribes quill and the words "He who has lost faith, loses his honour". If you are lucky enough to find the church unlocked you will see the sanctuary furnishings are mainly a memorial to Captain Ian Oswald Lidel VC, 5th Batallion the Cold Stream Guards killed in action in 1945 aged 25. The stained glass windows are memorials to the Evill and Bragington families. One of the gravestones to a Christopher Cooper, who died 8th April 1680 indicates the churchyard is much older than the present building. Until the late 19th century there were 3 water mills nearby producing paper, carpets and cloth. These were called Lady Mill, Lark Mill and Linnet Mill with the paper mill producing paper for Bank of England notes. The cache is not within the church grounds ,please bring a pen or pencil. Tweezers or a pin will be necessary to extract the log. Please do not attempt to remove the container. If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication.
