Deze wherigo is opgevat als een digitale stadsgids. We bezoeken enkele van Gents grote trekpleisters (Korenmarkt, Vrijdagmarkt, Sint-Baafs, Gravensteen...), maar proberen ook wat kleinere hoekjes te laten zien. De uitleg wordt aangeboden via fiches, die je al dan niet kan openen. Dit zorgt ervoor dat de rondleiding interactief wordt: wie Gent op zijn duimpje kent, kan enkel bekijken wat hem nog kan verrassen; de Gentleek kan het onderste uit de kan halen en alles lezen. Het is een project waar we de laatste maanden veel werk in gestoken hebben, dus we hopen dat jullie er veel plezier aan beleven.

De stashlocatie zou het ondanks de centrale ligging moeten mogelijk maken om rustig te loggen. Er zijn in de buurt wel wat populaire bankjes, maar de verstopplaats laat ook aan cachers toe zich wat verdekt op te stellen. Natuurlijk is het altijd mogelijk dat er per toeval iemand pal op de stash zit en tijdens de Gentse Feesten is heel Gent een potentiële dreuzelzone.
Markant Centrum (1) maakt deel uit van een reeks caches in Gent en deelgemeenten, met als doel ook de minder bekende monumenten en merkwaardige gebouwen even onder de aandacht te brengen. Markant Onroerend (1), in Wondelgem en Markant Onroerend (2) in Mariakerke zijn multi's. Voor centrum Gent, wilden we echter iets nieuws proberen en gingen we de uitdaging aan een Wherigo te schrijven. Meteen ook de allereerste in Gent en omstreken! (Voor wie nog nooit met een Wherigo gewerkt heeft en niet weet hoe eraan te beginnen, zie http://www.wherigo.com voor meer uitleg of bekijk de pagina's met cachetypes nog eens op geocaching.com zelf.) We plannen nog een vervolg in het zuidelijke deel van het stadscentrum.
Technische nota: We hebben de 1.0-versie van de cartridge gecreëerd in Urwigo voor een testloop, die geen problemen opleverde op android smartphones. De 1.1 is het resultaat van wat redactionele aanpassingen. Versie 1.2 (de huidige versie) voorziet een Engelse vertaling.
Markant Centrum (1) (Dutch for 'striking centre') shows you the touristic highlights of the inner city of Ghent (northern parts), but also some lesser known examples of immovable heritage. The walk's about 6km long, but its end is not too far from its starting location. If you take the time to read all info and to visit all buildings, you should be able to spend an entire afternoon in Ghent using this cache. Have fun!
This Wherigo is kind of a digital city guide of Ghent. We'll visit some of the major highlights (Wheat Market, Vrijdagmarkt, Saint Baafs, Gravensteen...), but we'll also show some smaller corners of the city. Info is provided in the form of information slips, which can be opened and read at your leisure. This makes for an interactive tour: if you know Ghent like the back of your hand, you can choose to read only the slips which still surprise you; but if you're new to the city you can try discovering everything. These last few months we worked very hard on this project, so we hope you can enjoy it.

Despite its central location, the stash should be in a spot where you can log quietly. There are some popular benches nearby, but the hiding place should provide opportunity to make a covered grab & log. Of course, there's always the possibility of someone sitting right on top of the stash and during the Gentse Feesten (see cartridge for more info) all of Ghent is a potential muggle zone.
Markant Centrum (1) is part of a series of caches in Ghent and its suburbs, aiming to give some attention to lesser known monuments or noteworthy buildings. Markant Onroerend (1), in Wondelgem and Markant Onroerend (2) in Mariakerke are multicaches, but so far only available in Dutch. Since we wanted to try something different for tackling the centre, we took it upon ourselves to make this Wherigo, which incidentely is also the first Wherigo in the environment of Ghent. (For those of you who never tried one and want more info: http://www.wherigo.com or look at the different cache types on geocaching.com.) We're planning to create a second Wherigo for the southern parts of Ghent in time.
Technical note: A 1.0 version of the cartridge was created in Urwigo for a testrun, which gave no problems on android smartphones. V. 1.1 was the result of some minor redactional adjustments. V. 1.2 (the current version) provides an English translation.
