PARAJE NATURAL RIO SECO
EL ENTORNO
La Rambla del Río Seco nace en el extremo Sur de la provincia de Alicante, en el término municipal del Pilar de la Horadada. El curso de la rambla transcurre desde los relieves de la Sierra Escalona hasta su desembocadura en el Mar Mediterráneo.
Las ramblas son unos de los elementos paisajísticos más peculiares del ambiente mediterráneo, que incluyen una gran variedad de sistemas de drenaje, y albergan interesantes comunidades biológicas tanto animales como vegetales, entre las que se encuentran varios de los endemismos del sureste ibérico.
GEOLOGÍA
En la cuenca del Río Seco se encuentran fundamentalmente los siguientes materiales geológicos: areniscas, margas, limos rojos y costras calizas y depósitos cuaternarios.
También podemos resaltar la enorme cantidad de fósiles del plioceno que se han encontrado en la zona. Estos pueden ser observados a simple vista en algunas partes del recorrido donde existen niveles conchíferos (Pecten , ostreas , gasterópodos e inclusive dientes de tiburón y restos de sirenios).
VALORES BIOLÓGICOS
La zona sea utilizada por múltiples aves divagantes o de paso (avetorillo, garceta, charrancito, andarríos grande y chico, zarapito real, aguja colinegra, rascón, avión zapador y la escasísima águila perdicera) y como área de invernada por otro numeroso grupo de aves que aprovechan el camino continuo entre ellas destacan la agachadiza común y el gavilán. También es zona de reproducción para el chorlitejo chico , el chorlitejo patinegro, la polla de agua, el martín pescador y el cernícalo vulgar.
El cauce del Rio Seco esta bordeado de amplias zonas de matorral mediterráneo con pinar con una numerosa población de conejos y perdices que cumplen papel crucial en el mantenimiento de un grupo amplio de depredadores, como por ejemplo, rapaces como el águila calzada , águila perdicera , águila real, búho real y búho chico.
En los carrizales densos y en conexión con el sotobosque cercano se encuentran, entre otros el lirón careto, la musaraña, la comadreja y la culebra bastarda. Es importante destacar que también es uno de los últimos reductos de la Comunidad en los que pueden encontrarse algunas parejas de gato montes y zorros.
Para la valoración ecológica de esta zona es importante resaltar que las comunidades de matorral de espino negro, coscoja, palmito, lentisco, acebuche, esparto, etc. , acompañados de pino carrasco de repoblación y algunos árboles cultivados , como el garrofero, representan la vegetación clímax del territorio y por tanto las de mayor grado de naturalidad de todo el Término municipal.
La rambla del Río Seco constituye un atractivo y valioso conjunto natural, con una importante función como corredor ecológico entre las pequeñas elevaciones interiores y el sector costero litoral.
POR ESTO MISMO ...
- Respeta la ruta y los elementos que la componen, colaborando con su limpieza y conservación.
- No recolectes especies vegetales ni animales.
- Evita todo lo que pueda originar un incendio.
- No abandones la senda, está totalmente prohibido entrar en las fincas privadas anexas al río.
- Deposita la basura en las papeleras de las áreas de descanso.
- Si llevas perro no lo dejes suelto. Está prohibido.
LA SERIE
La Ruta Río Seco es una bonita serie de 15 Kms en la que podréis disfrutar de 53 caches. La serie se divide en tres tramos Río Seco Alto , Río Seco Intermedio y Río Seco Bajo y se une también a la ruta “En busca de Pegaso” y algún cache mas que hay por el camino.
Os animamos a que la disfrutéis y que hagáis la ruta tranquilos, ya que todos los caches tienen algo especial. Esta ruta esta creada por tres equipos diferentes, PlisPlas, PinguinoPipo y Estoyfeliz y en ella hemos querido mostrar un poco del Geocaching creativo . Esto quiere decir que la creación de cada cache ha demandado mucho mas tiempo y dinero en realizarlo, por eso os pedios que los cuidéis, os recreéis y los volvéis a dejar en el mismo lugar para su mejor mantenimiento.
No os salgáis del sendero, id siempre por el camino mas bajo, por el propio cauce . Tened cuidado en días de lluvia ya que estáis paseando por una rambla . En época estival no olvidéis el agua y la protección solar. El terreno es apto para niños, pero id con buen calzado y tened en cuenta la distancia de cada tramo.
EL CACHE
El cache se encuentra muy fácil. Como es una ruta en un paraje natural todos los caches están relacionados con un aspecto de la naturaleza. Agudiza los sentidos y descubrirás algo mas que un contenedor. La serie Rio Seco Intermedio se accede a continuación de la serie en Busca de Pegaso dirección area recreativa Mil Palmeras, tiene un recorrido aproximado de cuatro kilómetros pudiendo acceder también por un camino de servicio del canal de trasvase , teniendo como punto de referencia el cache Rio Seco seis , también se puede acceder como continuación de la serie Rio Seco Bajo. La serie se compone de catorce caches . A buscar!

THE ENVIRONMENT
The Río Seco’s source is in the southern tip of the province of Alicante, in the municipality of Pilar de la Horadada. The course of the river bed runs from the hills of the Sierra Escalona to its mouth in the Mediterranean Sea. These types of river bed are one of the most distinctive features of the Mediterranean environment; they include a variety of drainage systems and house interesting biological communities, both animal and plant, and amongst these are many of the endemic species of the south eastern Iberian Peninsular.
GEOLOGY
Along the course of the Río Seco can be found the following geological materials: sandstone, red sandstone, limestone crusts and sediments from the final geological age, the Ediacaran period.
Also worth highlighting are the enormous number of fossils, from the Pliocene period, that have been found in the area. These can be seen with the naked eye along some parts of the route where there are levels of shells. (bivalve molluscs, gastropods ; even sharks teeth and the remains of animals from the manatee and seal family have been discovered).
BIOLOGICAL VALUES
The area is used by many birds that either live here or pass through (bitterns, egrets, terns, spotted redshanks, black tailed godwits, curlews, water rails and sand martins) and as a wintering ground for other large groups of birds that enjoy the continuous route; amongst these are snipes and hawks. It is also the breeding ground for plovers, Kentish plovers, moorhens, kingfishers and kestrels.
The dry riverbed is lined with large areas of Mediterranean scrub pine which houses a considerable population of rabbits and partridges. These play a crucial role in maintaining groups of predators, by being their hunted prey, such as the booted eagle , Bonelli’s eagle , golden eagle, eagle owl and long-eared owl.
In the dense reedbeds, and the copses closest to them, you can find, among other species, the dormouse, the shrew, the weasel and the Montpellier snake. It is important to highlight that it is also one of the last places in the area where you can find pairs of bobcats and foxes.
For the ecological value of this zone it is important to note the communities of black hawthorne scrub, kermes oak, dwarf fan palm, mastic tree, wild olive tree, esparto grass, etc. alongside the carrasco pine tree and some cultivated trees , such as the carob bean tree. These species represent the highest degree of naturalness in the entire municipality.
The riverbed of the Río Seco is an attractive and valuable natural asset with an important role as a geological corridor running between the small elevations inland and the coastal shoreline.
FOR THIS REASON :
- Respect the route, and all elements of conservation, keeping it clean, litter free and undamaged .
- Do not collect any plants or animals .
-Avoid doing anything that could cause a fire.
- Do not leave the path. It is totally forbidden to enter private lands adjoining the Rio Seco.
- Leave any rubbish in the rubbish bins located in the picnic areas.
- Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times. It is prohibited to let them loose.
THE SERIE
The lovely route “Rio Seco” can be discovered on foot or bycicle.
The full route is some 15 km. Along which you can enjoy looking for 53 caches . The route is divided into three sections : Rio Seco High , Rio Seco Middle, Rio Seco Low. It also joins the route “In Search of Pegasus” and there a few another caches, close by, too, that you can look for along the way.
We encourage you to come along and enjoy peaceful path specially as all the caches are something special. This route has been created by three different teams: PlisPlas, PinguinoPipo and Estoyfeliz , and along it, we have wanted to display some creative geocaching ! This means that creation of each cache has generally taken much more time and cost than normal , therefore we ask that you take care to leave each cache exactly as you find it for maintenance purposes.
Do not leave the path, always take the lowest route nearest to the river for the appropriate way . Take care in wet weather whilst walking trough the river bed.
In summer months dont forget water or sun cream.
The land is suitable for childrens but keep in mind the distances.
THE CACHE
The cache is very easy to find. As a route in a natural area all caches are related to an aspect of nature. Open your senses and discover something more than a container. Rio Seco Intermediate Series is accessed after the series En Busca de Pegaso. Mil Palmeras address recreational area, has a distance of approximately four kilometers can also access a service road diversion channel, taking as reference the cache Rio Seco Seis of this serie. Can also be accessed as a continuation of the series Rio Seco Low. The series consists of fourteen caches.
