Dia internacional das EarthCaches 2013: A edição PT
A Mina de São Domingos situa-se no Baixo Alentejo, na margem esquerda do Guadiana, a 17 km da Vila de Mértola e encontra-se inactiva desde 1966.
A Mina de São Domingos integra-se na Faixa Piritosa Ibérica que constitui uma das mais importantes Províncias Metalogénicas de sulfuretos maciços polimetálicos à escala mundial.
A história moderna de mineração deste local desenrola-se desde 1855 mas tem uma componente ainda mais antiga que começou durante a expansão do Império Romano.
Aproveitem esta oportunidade e venham conhecer melhor a história mineira da Mina de S. Domingos.
O Evento:
O evento inica-se às 10H30 do dia 13 junto ao Monumento do Mineiro Desconhecido nas Minas de São Domingos. Terminará às 13H00 no Telheiro mas têm toda a liberdade de explorar a zona da corta, a vila, a estação de britagem da Moitinha, a fábrica da Achada do Gamo, o Telheiro e a rota do caminho de ferro até ao porto do Pomarão.

International EarthCache Day 2013: the PT event
The São Domingos Mine is located approximately 17 km NE of Mértola, in the heart of the Iberian Pyrite Belt. It takes its name from the village of the same name where the mine is located.
Mining in the São Domingos area is known to have started before the Roman colonisation of the Iberian Peninsula that took place in approximately 218 BC and the mining history of São Domingos can be divided into three distinct mining periods.
The modern mining lease of this mine extends from 1855 to 1966, time that it was abandoned and left as you see it today.
The event:
The event starts at 10H30 at the Monument to the Unknown Miner and finishes at 13H00 in Telheiro (See header map). However, there is lots to see and you are welcome to explore the village, the open pit, the milling station at Moitinha, the sulphur factories at Achada do Gamo, Telheiro, the railway line and finally the Pomarão harbour.
