Geocache Description:

IMPORTANT: There are currently some issues at zone 1. The number you need is 1643

St. Alfege’s Church is dedicated to, and reputedly marks the place where Alfege, Archbishop of Canterbury, was killed by Viking raiders on 19 April 1012.

The second church built on this site was constructed around 1290.

During a storm in 1710 the medieval church collapsed, having had its foundation weakened by burials both inside and outside. Its replacement was built to the designs of Nicholas Hawksmoor, Sir Christopher Wren's famous pupil, and consecrated in 1718.

During the Blitz on 19 March 1941, incendiary bombs landed on the roof causing it to collapse, burning into the nave. The walls and the tower remained standing, but much of the interior was gutted. The church was restored by Sir Albert Richardson in1953.

Find out more about this church and some of the historical figures associated with it by completing this Wherigo.

ABOUT THIS WHERIGO: This cartridge takes you on a walk of approximately one mile through historic Greenwich to places associated with St. Alfege Church and can be completed within 30 minutes. You will visit five zones, which includes the final location where you can find a physical cache. You must sign the log of this cache if you want to log your find on the Geocaching.com website. You will also be issued with a completion code when you reach this point, which will enable you to log your find on the Wherigo.com website.

At each zone, you are required to answer a simple question about things you can see in the locations you visit. All answers are numerical and if you get it wrong, you will be able to try again. If you experience any problems, try walking outside the zone you are in and re-entering the zone.

PLEASE NOTE THAT PARTS OF THIS CARTRIDGE ARE ONLY AVAILABLE DURING DAYLIGHT HOURS. IF YOU VISIT AFTER 5pm YOU MAY NEED TO TAKE A SHORT DETOUR TO GZ.

Find out more information about Wherigo caches here. Download the cartridge you need to play the Church Micro 3690...Greenwich-St Alfege Wherigo here.

If you are a non-native English speaker, you can skip the history lesson and simply translate the last line of each page, which will give you the question or instruction.

The walk will take you past many fine caches which you can visit en-route.

I have extensively tested this cartridge on the Emulator and in the field using the iPhone Wherigo app and did not experience any problems. Any feedback about the functioning of the cartridge would be gratefully received.

Oh, and I almost forgot: this cartridge was created using Earwigo - many thanks to sTeamTraen for the development and maintenance of this great Wherigo creation tool.
