About Salem Train Station
The Oregon and California Railroad came to Salem in 1870. The first train station opened in 1871. It was destroyed by fire in 1888. The Southern Pacific (who acquired the O&C) built in new depot in 1888. It too was destroyed by fire in 1917. The current station was built in 1918. A surviving portion of the 1888 depot still exists as the old Freight Depot just south of the main station. It is scheduled to be refurbished into a new Amtrak Depot.
President Woodrow Wilson Stopped here in 1919 on a nation wide train tour to promote support for the Versailles Treaty. President Harding stopped here in 1923 just days before his death in San Francisco. President FDR campaign tour stopped here in 1932. President Hoover also stopped here in 1934. PResident Eisenhower was the last president to stop here in 1952. In May 1942 Japanese-Americans gathered at the station to be sent to Internment camps during WWII. Also many thousanda of troops went to or through Salem on the way to Camp Adair before heading off to Europe.
During the mid-1920's 14 scheduled passenger trains stopped in Salem daily. By 1969 that had dwindled down to one train daily. In 1971 passenger train service was handed over to Amtrak. In 1995 Southern Pacific sold the station to ODOT. In 1999 the train station was refurbished. In 2013 there are 6 scheduled passenger trains and numerous Amtrak busses that stop here. Later in 2013 Greyhound busses will also start uring this as their Salem Terminal. A busy place for sure.
