A tribute to Old Bet Hidden just off the Peter R. Burckmyer Trail (yellow trail) at Angle Fly Preserve in Somers, NY.
Congratulations to Old Bet on their 1,000th geocache find! In commemoration, we (Team Bacmac) and Larra-Three, WOOF contingent, have hidden a golden ammo can. We ask that the local FTF fanatics be courteous and allow Old Bet the honor of first to find on their tribute cache.
The geocaching duo of Old Bet, active since early 2004, is well-known in the Northern Westchester geocaching community. What is less known is the origin of their geocaching name: In the early 1800’s Hackaliah Bailey figured – correctly – that many people would pay for the experience of viewing an exotic animal up close. He purchased an elephant named “Old Bet” and soon started one of America’s first touring circuses. If the name Bailey sounds vaguely familiar, just add Barnum and voila, you get the famous Barnum and Bailey circus.
This story has local roots: Bailey memorialized his beloved Old Bet with a statue that can be seen today at the junction of Routes 100 and 202 in Somers.
Named after the last natural brook-trout spawning stream in Westchester, Angle Fly Preserve is a vital sanctuary for area wildlife. Its 654 acres are critical to the environmental health of the surrounding area and provide opportunities for hiking, fishing, cross-country skiing, snow-shoeing, bird watching, and nature study.
Angle Fly Preserve is open from 7:00 AM to dusk. A trail map of the preserve can be found here. (Note: the orange trail is colored magenta on this map, and the pink trail is not shown.)
Sadly for Freya and Luna the geopups and others of the canine persuasion, dogs are not allowed in Angle Fly Preserve.
