Op de laatste Koninginnedag, deed prinses Beatrix, afstand van de regering. Op datzelfde moment werd haar zoon Willem Alexander, Koning van Nederland.
Villa Eikenhorst
Koning Willem-Alexander en Koningin Máxima wonen al vanaf 2003 op het landgoed “De Horsten”, in villa Eikenhorst, hier op onderstaande foto. Deze villa werd tussen 1985 en 1987 gebouwd, als woonhuis voor Prinses Christina en Jorge Guillermo. In 1996 verhuisde prinses Christina met haar gezin, en stond de villa lange tijd leeg. De villa is ontworpen door de architect Baron J.W. van Asbeck, die ook de restauratie van Paleis ’t Loo en Slot Zeist voor zijn rekening had genomen. Een welbekende in Koninklijke kringen dus!
De Horsten
Het landgoed “De Horsten” is eigenlijk een samenvoeging van drie oudere landgoederen. Prins Frederik, de broer van Koning Willem II kocht de landgoederen Raephorst, Eikenhorst en Ter Horst en voegde deze samen. Raephorst is van deze drie ronduit de meest historische, de eerste beschrijvingen van dit landgoed gaan terug tot de 13e eeuw. Toen werd er een kasteel gebouwd door Kerstand van Raephorst, een afbeelding van dit kasteel is te zien op een tapijt, waarop ook het Leidens Ontzet is afgebeeld. Onderstaande afbeelding is een prent van Roelant Roghman uit 1650. Het werd regelmatig uitgebreid, tot het in de 18e eeuw in bezit kwam van twee zusters. Deze konden het kasteel echter niet meer onderhouden, en boden het in 1706 aan als hoofdprijs in een loterij. De winnaar was William Cadogon, die het vervolgens verkocht. De Nederlandse staatsman en minister Adriaan Pieter Twent was later ook nog bezitter van het kasteel. In 1840 werd het kasteel afgebroken, wel bleef een boerderij uit 1632 bewaard. Het kasteel heeft waarschijnlijk iets ten oosten van deze boerderij gestaan.
Openbaar
Een groot deel van dit landgoed is openbaar toegankelijk, echter bevind de ingang voor dit park zich aan de andere kant van het landgoed. Je vind deze ingang aan de doorgaande weg van Wassenaar naar Voorschoten, de Papelaan, oftewel N448. Aanrader hierbij is om een bezoek te brengen aan de Seringenberg, die tussen 1791 en 1792 werd aangelegd. Een spiraalvormig pad brengt je door een berg van paarse seringen naar een theekoepeltje bovenop de berg. De seringen bloeien met name in de maand mei. De Moeite Waard
Het landgoed leent zich bij uitstek voor een heerlijke wandeling door de natuur. Voor de cacher valt er echter (nog) niks te vinden. Het gehele landgoed in sinds 1845 in eigendom van de Koninklijke familie, dus toestemming voor het plaatsen van een cache zal nog wel eens tegenvallen. Maar genieten van de natuur kan je er bij uitstek! Verschillende wandelroutes lopen door het landgoed heen, en voor een hapje en een drankje kan je terecht bij een theehuis. Dit theehuis is gevestigd in het voormalige schiethuis, en is één gebouwen die in opdracht van Prins Frederik gebouwd werd op het landgoed. Hieronder een foto van dit theehuis, uit 1966.
Since April 30th 2013, Wassenaar is the official Royal Village of The Netherlands. We placed a cache to commemorate this fact. Placed in the King and Queen’s “backyard”. You can fin dit along a bicycle path, and therefore can not be reached by car, but you can get pretty close!

At the very last “Queensday”, a Dutch national (bank) holiday, princess Beatrix abdicated the throne. At that very same moment, her son Willem-Alexander, became King of The Netherlands.
Villa Eikenhorst
King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima have been living on the estate “De Horsten” since 2003, in Villa Eikenhorst, shown on the following picture. This villa was built between 1985 and 1987, as a house for Princess Christina (Princess Beatrix her sisiter) and her husband Jorge Guillermo. In 1996 Princess Christina moved out, and for a long time, the villa remained empty. The villa is designed by Dutch architect Baron J.W. van Asbeck, who also was involved in the restoration of another Royal palace, ’t Loo in Apeldoorn, and castle Zeist. He wasn’t a stranger to the Royal family.
De Horsten
The estate “De Horsten” is a interconnection of 3 older estates. Prince Frederik, the brother of King Willem II, bought the 3 estates Raephorst, Eikenhorst, Ter Horst and joined them together. Raephorst is by far the most interesting in a historical way. The first mentions date back to the 13th century. At that time a castle was built by Kerstand van Raephorst, a picture of this castle can be seen on a historical carpet, which also depicts the seige of Leiden. The following image is an engraving made by Roelant Roghman in 1650. The castle was expanded from time to time, untill it came into the possesion of two sisters in the 18th century. They weren’t able to maintain the castle, and decided to organise a lottery with the castle as the grand pirce. The winner was William Cadogon, who consequently sold the castle. Later in history the famous Dutch politician Adriaan Pieter Twent owned the castle for while. In 1840 the castle was demolished, only a farm built in 1632 was left standing. It is assumed that the castle stood a bit to the east of this farm.
Opened To The Public
A large part of this Royal estate is opened to the public, the entrance to the grounds however can be found on the other side of the estate. The entrance is by the main road between Wassenaar and Voorschoten, the Papelaan, or N448. Recommendation is to visit the “Seringenberg” (lilacs-mountain), which was formed between 1791 and 1792. A spiral path will take you thru a mountain of purple lilacs to a little tea dome at the top of the mountains. Lilacs usually bloom in may. The next image shown this mountain in full bloom.
Worthwhile
The estate is the perfect place for a nice walk thru nature. From a cachers point of view however, the not a lot to do. The entire estate had been the property of the Dutch Royal family since 1845. Getting permission to place a cache, can be quite difficult. But, you can always enjoy nature without looking for a cache! Different routes are set out throughout the grounds, and for a little bite and a drink you van visit a little lunchroom. This lunchroom is housed in the former ‘gunhouse’, one of the few remaining building which were built on the estate during Prince Frederik’s reign. The last picture is one of this former ‘gunhouse’, dated 1966.
