Vippetangen
Vippetangen is the name of the southernmost point of Akersneset. The area got it's name after an old Vippefyr, which is a primitive, old type of "lighthouse" mounted on a lever arm to be raised and lowered by hand. Before the harbour was extended with concrete docks, the place had a natural rock and beach waterfront. At this place, there was a military execution peleton and also a stone quarry where prisoners used to work. The lion statues in front of Stortinget (The Parliament) where made here.
The place has also been used for public baths, landing place for steam boats (both local and to America) and grain storage as shown on the pictures below. You can still see the tall grain storage silos. Grain is delivered by boat and then moved to mills by trucks. Earlier, there used to be a separate tram line to transport the grains from the harbour to the mills along the Akerselva river.
