Great spot for watching salmon fishing
Urriðafoss: in need of a new container. would be great if anyone good replace it. When you are driving along ringroad nr. 1, this is a falls you should not miss. It is easily overseen, not mentioned in tourguides but we think this is a real hidden gem. Curious? Go and look for yourself. Driving on nr. 1 between Selfoss and Hella there is a roadsign pointing towards Urriðafoss. The sign to road 302 is southwards bound (at N 63.55.954 – W 20.40.073). If you want you can drive from here along the coast and do some more geocaching all the way to Grindavik. It is only about one mile(2 km) so it doesn’t take a lot of time. There is a parkinglot and an informationsign to tell you about the falls and the plans for the future. We do hope the dam will not be build so that the falls will remain as beautiful as they are today. We visited in April and parts of the falls were covered in ice. That makes it even more spectacular we think. But as mentioned earlier, go and have a look yourself and tell us in your log if you liked it. A bit about Urriðafoss: Urriðafoss (the waterfall of the salmon) in the river of þjórsá flows with the highest volume of water of all waterfalls in Iceland. The waterfall falls of the east-side of the mighty þjórsárhraun (the lava of þjórsá). The quantity is 360 m3 per second. The fall is 6 meters and the power is more than 100 MW. In winter the waterfall can freeze and the depth of the ice can reach up to 20 meters. Salmon runs in the river þjórsá. About the cache: We placed a small plastic container with a logpaper, no pen so bring your own. There is room for small tb'x. Since first placing there has been a path made and we had to remove the container. We do not want you to go over the fence!! Just reach out. We would love to see pictures in your log!
