La Porta all’Arco è il più famoso monumento architettonico della Volterra etrusca. Realizzata con materiali e tecniche costruttive diverse, segno di numerosi rimaneggiamenti avvenuti nel corso dei secoli, la porta ha una copertura ad arco in pietra, decorato sulla facciata esterna da tre sculture a forma di testa umana. Gli stipiti sono formati da blocchi di pietra arenaria e sono databili al IV sec. a.C.
Le tre teste e l’arco sono stati invece realizzati fra il III e il II sec. a. C., con due tipi di pietra differenti: i conci dell’arco sono di una pietra calcarea estratta nei pressi di Volterra, mentre le teste sono in selagite, una roccia che si trova nella zona di Montecatini Val di Cecina.
At the end of Via Porta all'Arco stands the main gateway to Etruscan Volterra, a huge arch of a gate that has survived since the 4th century B.C. -- with a bit of Roman-era rebuilding in the 1st century B.C. On the outside of the arch are mounted three basalt heads -- worn by well over 2,000 years of wind and rain to featurelessness -- said to represent the Etruscan gods Tinia (Jupiter), Uni (Juno), and Menrva (Minerva). In 1944, just before intense fighting began against the Germans laying siege to the city, Volterran partisans saved the gate from destruction by filling it overnight with stones -- both for structural support and to keep it from being a focus of attack.
