Welcome to Kindley Field Park!

This part of Bermuda didn't actually exist until 1944! This narrow stretch of park land between the L.F Wade International Airport and Ferry Reach is reclaimed land and has a unique narrow band of saltmarsh habitat.

Entering WWII in 1941 the U.S was given permission by the U.K to develop two bases in Bermuda, Kindley Field airbase and Fort Bell. An additional 760 acres of land were created by dredging the bottom of Castle Harbour. Completed in June 1944, the work resulted in the present day airport, the creation of Clearwater Beach and the connection of Cooper's Island to St. David's Island for the first time.

Along the coastal edge of this park you'll find saltmarsh habitat, characterized by coastal plants that are adapted to occasional flooding by seawater. This includes Black Mangroves (Avicennia germinans), trees with silvery green leaves and a dark trunk which can grow to 30-40ft tall. Adapting to saltwater environments that would kill other plants, Black Mangroves extract the salt from the water and push it out through their leaves, leaving crystals of salt on the surface of their leaves. They also have roots called pneumatophores, "air breathing roots", that poke up out of the sediment.

Black Mangroves are disappearing in Bermuda due to storm damage and coastal development; therefore they were listed as a Protected Species in 2011.
