FAIAL, a freguesia das pontes
A origem do nome da freguesia do Faial deveu-se à grande abundância de faias “Myrica faya”. São árvores indígenas da família das Miracáceas que, ainda hoje, crescem espontaneamente nos vales das ribeiras e no alto das montanhas.
Diz-se que a freguesia teve a sua origem numa fazenda povoada, que ali existiu com sua capela da invocação da Natividade da Virgem ou de Nossa Senhora do Faial, a qual serviu de sede à nova paroquia.
O povoamento acontece por volta de 1519.
A freguesia foi criada por alvará régio de 20 de Fevereiro de 1550. Saliente-se que o Porto da Cruz e São Roque do Faial pertenceram outrora ao Faial.
Entre os povoadores sobressaem mouros e galegos. Destaque para o nome de um antigo povoador: Lançarote Teixeira.
Alguns sítios tomaram o nome dos antigos sesmeiros, casos do Lombo Galego e Lombo Lourenço.
Entre as actividades económicas sobressai a zona hortícola apropriada para as árvores frutíferas e igualmente para outras culturas.
Nos últimos anos, a freguesia tem-se evidenciado com a cultura do fruto chamado anona, em honra do qual se realiza mesmo uma festa anual.
Durante muitos anos, teve uma cultura de vimes. Mas o tempo acabou por quase marginalizar os vimes, com a redução crescente da procura por trabalhos em vime.
Por outro lado, conta-se que nos primeiros tempos da colonização, a Ribeira do Faial ou Ribeira Seca, serviu de ponto estratégico para a construção de engenhos. Produzia-se, então, muita cana-de-açúcar. Chegaram a existir no séc. XVII três engenhos movidos a água, destinados à moagem da cana sacarina, a qual, depois, era exportada para o continente e estrangeiro.
Hoje em dia ainda são visíveis ruínas, abaixo da actual ponte. E por falar em ponte, rezam as crónicas que o Faial foi conhecida pela freguesia das pontes. Tudo porque ali se construiu, entre 1907 e 1910, a maior ponte da ilha da Madeira. Tinha 130 metros e ficou mais conhecida pela "ponte das sete bocas".
Actualmente só restam ruínas desta obra de arte, porque o mau tempo que fustigou a ilha em 1984 acabou por derrubá-la. Ao lado encontra-se a o kartódromo do faial, seguido de uma zona de lazer e da praia natural da foz da ribeira do Faial.
Muito próximo foi erguida a ponte dos cinco arcos sobre a Ribeira da Ametade, no Sítio dos Moinhos.
E, a 22 de Junho de 1986 é inaugurada pelo Presidente da República de então, Dr. Mário Soares, a nova ponte do Faial.
Refira-se ainda que é no Faial que fica uma das duas centrais hidroeléctricas da ilha. Fica na margem esquerda da Ribeira da Ametade. Trata-se da Central Hidroeléctrica da Fajã da Nogueira.
Nesta zona situa-se o montado do sabugal, uma zona de beleza extraordinária dentro do parque natural da Madeira.
A freguesia conta com cerca de 2.800 habitantes.
Quanto ao clima, estamos perante uma das freguesias com condições climatéricas bastante amenas, dada a sua altitude e proximidade com o mar.
Como chegar
A partir do Funchal entre na Via rápida em direcção ao Aeroporto e Machico. Seguindo as placas, deve continuar em direcção ao Porto da Cruz pela antiga Estrada Regional 101. O Faial fica depois da freguesia do Porto da Cruz.
Também se pode ir subindo o Monte em direcção ao Poiso, de onde se desce para o Ribeiro Frio, chegando então ao Faial.
A Cache
O percurso desta Multicache têm aproximadamente 11km, pelo que deverá ser feita de carro.
Esta multicache tem como objectivo, dar a conhecer aos Geocachers a pequena freguesia do Faial, mostrando os principais pontos de interesse da mesma.

FAIAL, the parish of bridges!
The origin of the name of the parish of Faial was due to the abundance of beech "Myrica faya". Trees are indigenous family of Miracáceas that even today grow spontaneously in the valleys of rivers and in the mountains.
It is said that the parish had its origin in a farm populated, that there existed a chapel with the invocation of the Nativity of the Virgin or Our Lady of Faial, which served as headquarters for the new parish.

How to reach Faial
Directions From Funchal between the freeway towards the Airport and Machico. Following the signs, should continue towards Puerto de la Cruz by the former Regional Road 101. Faial is after the village of Porto da Cruz.
You can also go climbing Mount towards Lander, from where it descends to the Ribeiro Frio, then to the Faial ..
