  • This geocache is available daily from sunrise to sunset. There is no fee to visit the grounds.

  • Please park at Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site as there is no visitor parking at Top Cottage!

Geocache:
This is a three stage multi-cache along the Top Cottage Trail (Please do not bushwhack) .  The first two stages are metal tags and the final is an ammo can.  The hike is approximately two miles.

History:
When Franklin Roosevelt built Top Cottage, he was in his second term as President of the United States. To offset the pressures he routinely faced, he loved inviting close friends and associates to Top Cottage. He brought world leaders there to discuss foreign policy issues in an informal, intimate setting. The first royals to visit Top Cottage were the Crown Prince and Princess of Norway in April 1939. The most publicized visit to the cottage was that of the British monarchs in June 1939 on their month-long 10,000 mile tour of Canada and the United States. King George VI and Queen Elizabeth’s unprecedented visit to the United States was meant to strengthen the ties between the two countries on the eve of World War II. During the visit, Top Cottage was the setting of a famous picnic for the British royals that made headline news, though no press was in attendance. The informal picnic with its wide range of invited guests, the formal hospitality at the big house, followed by a Val-Kill swim, made for a memorable and very typical visit with the Roosevelts. Shortly before her death in 2002, the Queen Mother recalled her ride up Dutchess Hill with FDR at the wheel with humor and great relief, and still remembered the warmth and welcome of her Hyde Park visit.

Did You Know . . . while the famous “Hot Dog Picnic” did take place at Top cottage, the Roosevelts served more than just hot dogs. There were a variety of American foods served at this picnic. A benefit to the Queen, since she did not partake in the tasting of a hot dog.
