Geocache Description:

A cache placed at the north end of the Tavy Cleave.

The Tavy Cleave is the most dramatic stretch of river that can be found anywhere on Dartmoor with some of the steepest natural rocks as well.  Here the River Tavy passes through a narrow gorge between towering masses of granite on each side, but particularly on the west side where the rocks quickly soar to over 1,400 feet to the Tavy Cleave Tors.

The Tavy Cleave is a beautiful way to enter the most remote parts of the north moor although care must be taken as the path is often rocky and occasionally very close to the River Tavy.  We have been asked to avoid placing caches in the Tavy Cleave itself but I have now placed one at each end where it opens out into the normal River Tavy valley and I would like to thank the Dartmoor National Park Authority for their kind permission to place this cache, which has been placed according to the new geocaching guidelines.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This cache is located in the Willsworthy Military Range where live firing occurs. You must check out the Firing Notices before entering the range. DO NOT ENTER THE RANGE WHEN THE RED FLAGS ARE FLYING. Never pick up any objects, they may be unexploded devices.

The weather on Dartmoor can change suddenly and unexpectedly and ALL types of weather conditions can be experienced. Please ensure that you have the correct clothing and map & compass (and know how to use them). Please do NOT rely solely on your GPS.
