Park Information
 History:
The commuter tracks below you were once part of the Vanderbilts' mighty New York Central Railroad that radiated from Grand Central Terminal in the heart of New York City! In 1867, Cornelius Vanderbilt, whose grandson Frederick owned the Hyde Park Estate, became president of the railroad expanding his empire until New York Central trains reached as far west as St. Louis, with trunk lines in six states. It was also the only railroad having freight connections into Manhattan and was therefore an important factor in New York City's food supply. The New York Central was responsible for many technological innovations, including the first sleeping car, the first high-powered brakes, and the first centralized traffic-control system. By 1968, railroad traffic declined to the point where the New York Central was forced to merge with its rival the Pennsylvania Railroad which was disbanded only a few years later. These tracks are owned now by AMTRAK.

Did you know . . . though his family owned the New York Central, Frederick Vanderbilt most often commuted into New York City by car, driven down Route 9 by his chauffeur to his offices near Grand Central Terminal?
