Take a 0.4 mile walk to the end of a pier on the edge of the Croatan Sound. Once the cache is in hand be careful to keep it in your hand unless you are prepared for a swim.
Plenty of water nearby so please keep small children under close supervision.
This one was not intended to require any tools but it appears after extended periods of inactivity an adjustable spanning device designed to provide grip and mechanical torque advantage to stationary objects that are usually rotary may at various times prove to be rather handy.
Cache is not accessible from US Highway 64 but is within the shadow of the Virginia Dare Memorial Bridge, named after the first English child born in the Americas, and hidden a short distance from OBX Velkominn Respite. Virginia Dare and her parents were part of the Roanoke Island Colony, a late 16th-century attempt by Queen Elizabeth I to establish a permanent English settlement here that mysteriously disappeared from Roanoke Island between 1587 and 1590. Historians call them The Lost Colony.
The Virginia Dare Memorial Bridge, one of two bridges connecting Roanoke Island to the mainland of North Carolina, opened August of 2002 and at 5.2 miles is the longest bridge in the state. About 22% of the estimated 5 million annual visitors to the Outer Banks cross it. Few if any of them will be able to see you on this search expedition.
