At Mount Hotham peak you will have a spectacular 360degree view that includes Mt Buffalo, Mt Feathertop and Mt Buller.
The early development of Mt Hotham came via the needs of stockmen moving their cattle and gold mining, where rough tracks were created to allow access. In 1874 Governor Bowen visited Mount Hotham and the area became known as Diamantina Springs. 640 acres was then set aside for “public purposes”. The area was recognised for its beauty and tourists were drawn to see Mt Feathertop, Mt Loch and Mt Blowhard. By the end of the nineteenth century, skiing had emerged as a recreational sport in Europe. In 1900 the Petersen Brothers completed the first winter traverse of Hotham. By 1905 the first car had been driven to St Bernard as access continued to improve which then led to a demand in better accommodation. The rest, as they say, is history.
How do I get there?
Approx. 2.5klm return – allow 1 hour – classified as “Easy”
Park in the Hotham Village car park. Beginning from the Snowbird Inn in the Village, keep to the right of the Summit chair. Follow the vehicle trail from the top of the chairlift past the Telstra Tower to the Fire Tower. Return via the same route.
Be Prepared
Please DO NOT attempt during heavy snow coverage. Digging can be both futile and dangerous.
The best months for walking are from November through to April, however, weather conditions can change rapidly, and snowfalls and blizzards can occur at any time of the year. During the summer period, bushfires can also pose a threat so check the CFA website for updates prior to departure.
