Geocache Description:

The cache is situated on the Franschoek pass between Franschoek and Villiersdorp. There is parking near the cache site but be careful of oncoming vehicles.

The Franschhoek Pass and Jan Joubertsgat Bridge connects Franschhoek and the Boland Winelands with Villiersdorp, Hermanus, Caledon and the Overberg.

When entering Franschhoek from Stellenbosch and Paarl one gets the impression that this quaint historical Huguenot Village is the end of the line, so to speak. However, if you drive through the town you reach the Huguenot Monument site. At the T junction turn left and pass the monument. This road takes you out of Franschhoek in a steep climb all the way to the summit of the Franschhoek Pass. The pass then descends from its zenith of 751m down to one of the oldest bridges in South Africa. This is the Jan Joubertsgat Bridge which is today a national monument. Its 5-metre span crosses a kloof named Jan Joubertsgat, so named after a frontiersman that died after an accident there in which the draught pole of his wagon broke. This bridge was incorporated into later constructions and is still in use today. It was declared a National Monument in 1979. The pass was completed in 1825 at a cost of £8 390 – far more than was originally budgeted.

The cache container is a small camouflaged preformed plastic tube.
