Church Micro 2587... Mangotsfield Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

higster: Have been out today bringing in a lot of our CM caches and various others which have been out for some years.
The area in which these caches are set is just too wide to maintain and most we adopted when spending time in Somerset.
Thanks to all who have visited in the past.

Geocache Description:

A quick cache near the village church in Mangotsfield. Car parking is nearby. The nearby roads are busy. Please use the parking suggested. There is a post office, a supermarket or two, a cafe and a public house in the village. You are looking for a key safe wedged behind sign

The church is dedicated to St James. St James was an important figure in the early Christian church and many churches are dedicated to him. This church may well have been one of the many stages on the Way of St James. See link for further details. Each church along the way was dedicated to the saint.

Mangotsfield parish church was established in the early 13th century when WILLIAM du PUTOT built a chapel in his manor house. Little evidence remains of this distant settlement but you will see 17th and 18th century buildings amongst the newer ones.

The church was the main Anglican church in the area for many years and had a Chapel of Ease at Downend. The grand tombs in the corner of the churchyard belong to the local landowners the Cave family.

The population increased rapidly in the 19th century, with the introduction of the railway, mining and industry into the area.

At that time there were many different church groups within Mangotsfield. (This is documented in the Kingswood Trail achives)

The highest point on the church is an Intersected Trig Point, for those who are interested. The clock in the church tower, a gift of JONATHAN TUCKER, dates from 1687 as do the bells. The bells were re-cast into a peal of eight in 1922.

Gothic in style, the nave of the church dates mainly from 1851, but the chancel has retained most of the medieval work. If you are able to enter the church, behind the organ, under an arch, are the battered medieval figures of William du Putot’s descendant, EDMUND BLOUNT in armour and his wife Margaret in pointed headdress and a long gown. The figure of Edmund, which had long lain under the chantry, was unearthed in 1896 and suddenly became the centre of a great sensation. In that year a man investigating the pedigree of the SHIPWAYs found apparent proof that their ancestors were buried here. The Blounts were proved to be Shipways; the Shipway crest and Shipway inscriptions were found in various parts of the church. All missing links in the ancestry were found, but before the pedigree was established the investigator was proved to be an imposter! He himself had forged the links! He paid the penalty for this with imprisonment, the old stone figures remaining Blounts. The parish register dates from 1579.

Other notable names connected with the village include the PLAYER and CAVE families. Player land now holds a Golf course whilst Cave land was largely sold and is now given over to housing. Another of Mangotsfields famous sons... Francis Greenway, was a convicted fraudster. His portrait was shown on the first Australian decimal-currency $10 note (1966–93), making him probably the only convicted forger in the world to be honoured on a banknote. The reason for the honour? He was the architect of many important buildings in Austrailia. Oh, and he designed the Chapel of Ease (Christ Church) in Downend as well. The village today is largely a commuter suburb with good links with Bristol. The nearby war memorial area gets busy with young muggles. Adjacent to the GZ is Mangotsfield House which is one of the older buildings in the village. Please replace the cache carefully.
