Le Makila
Le makila est le bâton de marche du Basque, qui était généralement remis à l'adolescent pour marquer son entrée dans le monde adulte.
Sa vocation défensive vient probablement du temps où les anciens Basques avaient un fort goût pour les lances, demi-piques et dards divers. Dans les temps plus récents et plus pacifiques, les Basques se dotèrent d'une canne robuste, pratique et bien équilibrée, mais aussi d'un compagnon de route, la pointe du makila étant alors disponible en cas de coup dur.
Le makila est un objet usuel personnel dont la longueur doit être adaptée à la taille de la personne. Il peut aussi être offert en signe d'honneur. Un des plus anciens ateliers de fabrication situé à Larressore, village du Pays basque français (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), produit des makila depuis 8 générations, avant 1789. D'autres ateliers existent au Pays basque, notamment à Bayonne et à Irun. (

Le Makila est également le nom du golf de Bassussarry situé sur la route de Cambo, près du Château d'Urdains, plus connu des locaux et des géocacheurs sous le nom de la
Maison Rose (
Gilles64). La cache n'est pas sur le parcours mais elle est proche du

The makila is a walking stick consisting of an engraved medlar wood shaft cut to a length to suit its owner, generally either hipbone or sternum-height. The bottom is often shod with steel or other metal and ends in a ferrule (blunt spike for traction). The handle is also often covered with metal or woven leather to form a hand-grip, with a lanyard attached to the bottom of this grip. The stick is capped with a flattened knob or pommel, made of horn, steel, or bronze. The top portion consisting of the knob and hand-grip can be pulled off the top of the stick, revealing a hidden spike or blade, which effectively turns the stick into a short spear. The pommel's shape is said to resemble the beret worn by the basque shepherd.
Some makila are created for ceremonial purposes, often presented as gifts or awards to individuals. They are decorated with elaborate engravings and their metal parts are made of silver or gold. These are often 4 ft long rather than a custom length. (Wikipedia)
The Makila is also the name of the golf club at Bassussary on the road to Cambo, near the Château d'Urdains, better known to the locals and the geocachers as the Maison Rose (Gilles64).
