The history
During the War of 1812, the winter of 1813 was one of extreme cold and heavy snows. Between February and April, the 104th Regiment of Foot marched more than 1100 kilometres from Fredericton, New Brunswick to Kingston, Ontario to reinforce British troops and thwart an expected invasion by the Americans. This effort by a regiment of poorly clothed, frostbitten and hungry soldiers stands as an incredible feat in military history. This series commemorates the March of New Brunswick’s 104th and the locations where they manned forts, blockhouses, and outposts as well as some key personnel.

Une histoire authentiquement canadienne. Durant la guerre de 1812, l’hiver 1813 a été d’une rigueur extrême et a été marqué de nombreuses chutes de neige. De février à avril, le 104e Régiment d’infanterie a marché plus de 1100 kilomètres, de Fredericton, au Nouveau-Brunswick, à Kingston, en Ontario, pour prêter main-forte aux troupes britanniques et bloquer une invasion projetée par les Américains. Cette épreuve, réalisée par un régiment de soldats pauvrement vêtus, souffrant de la froidure et rongés par la faim, marque un exploit remarquable dans les annales militaires. Cette collection commémore le marche de Regiment du Nouveau Brunswick 104e et les emplacements où ils les forts maniés, les blockhaus, et les postes avancés de même que du personnel clé.

I am Private Joseph Girouard. I am an Acadian from Bouctouche. Although my name is Joseph, I enlisted in the 104th (New Brunswick) Regiment of Foot in 1812 under the name of Marin. With the threat of war with the United States growing greater, the regiment was actively seeking recruits to fill up its ranks. An officer came to Buctouche, met my son Marin, and recruited him. When I found out about this, I protested to the officer that Marin was too young to be a soldier. The officer allowed me to be a substitute for my son, but I had to use his name. So, I became Private Marin Girouard. When the regiment was ordered to Canada in 1813, I marched along with it. The details of my service are not known as I do not appear in the regiment’s records. The proof of my service lies in the pension that my son Marin received. This was in 1874, when Marin was about 80 years old. It started at $20 per month and was later increased to $30. In 1889, when he was about 96 years old, Marin told another version of this story. He said that we had both joined the 104th that I had made the march to Canada while he had not. Either way, he was still collecting his pension!
