St. Mary's Church
The Church of St Mary the Virgin stands on one of the highest points in Ross-on-Wye and the spire can be seen for many miles around. It is also one of the largest churches in Herefordshire.
It has been the centre of Christian worship in the town for over 700 years and is central to a large group of parishes in the area. It was originally founded by Robert de Betun, Bishop of Hereford, in the 13th century. The church, in its current form, was dedicated in 1316. There is evidence that suggests that there was a Saxon and Norman church there before the current one was built.
The spire towers 205 feet into the air and dates back to the 14th Century but was rebuilt in 1721 and the pinnacles were added using funds supplied by John Kyrle "The Man of Ross". The spire was repaired in 1852 after lightening struck it and more repairs were needed in 1911. More recently, the top of the spire was rebuilt in 1952 using funds donated by the public.
The clock was added to the tower in 1924 and in 1975 three of the pinacles were removed as they were deemed to be unsafe and were replaced in 1986.

The cache was a magnetic micro but has now been upgraded to a small camo container that holds a log, a pencil some geo-tat and can easily hold trackables.
Please replace as found.
The Church Micro Series
If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication.
There is also a Church Micro Stats page found via the Bookmark list
