Distinguished Residents of Buckinghamshire #1 Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

Birding Bob: I enjoyed putting together this series of puzzles based on distinguished people who have at some time resided in Buckinghamshire, learning something about them in the process. Visiting the caches to remove the containers is a process tinged with sadness but one that brought back many happy memories. Many thanks to those, more than a hundred in total, who took the trouble to solve the puzzles and visit this attractive area to search for the caches.

Geocache Description:

The first in a series of fourteen tributes to residents of Buckinghamshire that have distinguished themselves in their chosen sphere. The puzzles are designed to be solvable by anyone familiar with Google.

Person Alpha, born in Kirk Deighton, Yorkshire, was for the last nineteen years of his life resident in Buckinghamshire. Although he rose to the top of his profession his name is not widely known today. Among his many services to his country the most significant was his recognition of the talent of Person Beta, a man of humble origin also born in Yorkshire, and to promote actively the appointment of Beta to a task of national importance, a bold choice when there were hundreds of others with an equal or better claim to the appointment.
The achievements of Beta exceeded all reasonable expectations, laying the foundations of his own lasting fame and the ensuing dominance of the United Kingdom in world affairs. In the course of completing the allotted task, Beta made important contributions to the sciences of astronomy, medicine, navigation, geography and botany.
Alpha's name is given to a group of islands, a cape and a bay.

Alpha died in Chalfont St Giles on dd AB yCDy
Beta had E children, none of whom had children of their own.
Beta died on FG mH yyJy
