The history
During the War of 1812, the winter of 1813 was one of extreme cold and heavy snows. Between February and April, the 104th Regiment of Foot marched more than 1100 kilometres from Fredericton, New Brunswick to Kingston, Ontario to reinforce British troops and thwart an expected invasion by the Americans. This effort by a regiment of poorly clothed, frostbitten and hungry soldiers stands as an incredible feat in military history. This series commemorates the March of New Brunswick’s 104th and the locations where they manned forts, blockhouses, and outposts as well as some key personnel.

Une histoire authentiquement canadienne. Durant la guerre de 1812, l’hiver 1813 a été d’une rigueur extrême et a été marqué de nombreuses chutes de neige. De février à avril, le 104e Régiment d’infanterie a marché plus de 1100 kilomètres, de Fredericton, au Nouveau-Brunswick, à Kingston, en Ontario, pour prêter main-forte aux troupes britanniques et bloquer une invasion projetée par les Américains. Cette épreuve, réalisée par un régiment de soldats pauvrement vêtus, souffrant de la froidure et rongés par la faim, marque un exploit remarquable dans les annales militaires. Cette collection commémore le marche de Regiment du Nouveau Brunswick 104e et les emplacements où ils les forts maniés, les blockhaus, et les postes avancés de même que du personnel clé.

This cache location
Originally built by the French as Fort Beauséjour, it was captured by the British in 1755 and renamed Fort Cumberland. The Americans tried to capture it in 1776 as they wanted to use it as a base for an attack against Halifax. In order to prevent this from reoccurring during the War of 1812, members of New Brunswick’s 104th Regiment of Foot occupied the fort in August 1812 and began refurbishing it. They were assisted by members of the Westmoreland County militia. When the 104th left for Canada in 1813, they were replaced by a detachment of the 99th (Prince of Wales’ Tipperary) Regiment.

À l’origine construit par les Français et nommé fort Beauséjour, cet ouvrage est tombé aux mains des Britanniques en 1755 avant d’être rebaptisé fort Cumberland. Les Américains ont tenté de s’en emparer en 1776 pour s’en servir de base et, ainsi, attaquer Halifax. Pour éviter qu’une telle situation ne se reproduise pendant la guerre de 1812, les soldats du 104e Régiment de fantassins du Nouveau-Brunswick ont occupé le fort en août 1812. Ils ont entrepris de le rénover, avec l’aide de la milice du comté de Westmorland. Lorsqu’en 1813, le 104e quitte l’endroit pour se rendre au Canada, il est remplacé par un détachement du 99e Régiment du Prince de Galles.
