John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, (1892-1973), yleisimmin tunnettu nimellä J. R. R. Tolkien, oli englantilainen kirjailija ja filologi, joka työskenteli englannin kielen professorina Oxfordin yliopistossa. Hänen tunnetuimpia töitään ovat kuvitteelliseen Keski-Maahan sijoittuvat fantasiaromaanit, kuten Hobitti eli sinne ja takaisin, Taru sormusten herrasta ja Silmarillion.
Vaikka Tolkien ei ollut ensimmäinen fantasiakirjailija, pidetään häntä usein nykyaikaisen fantasiakirjallisuuden isänä. Tolkien esitteli Keski-Maa-kirjoissaan poikkeuksellisen yksityiskohtaisen fantasiamaailmansa, jolla oli oma historia ja maantiede. Innoituksen ajatukselle luoda tarusto kehittämiensä kielten ympärille Tolkien sai eri maiden mytologioista ja eepoksista, kuten Kalevalasta.

Hobitti eli sinne ja takaisin (The Hobbit or There and Back Again) on J. R. R. Tolkienin kirjoittama fantasiaromaani, joka kertoo hobitti Bilbo Reppulin seikkailusta velho Gandalfin ja 13 kääpiön kanssa. Englanninkielinen alkuteos ilmestyi alun perin vuonna 1937. Idean kirjaan Tolkien sai korjatessaan opiskelijoidensa tekstejä. Hänen mieleensä juolahti lause ”In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit”, suomeksi ”Kolossa maan sisällä asui hobitti”. Sellaista sanaa kuin hobbit ei ollut olemassa, joten Tolkien päätti keksiä sille merkityksen. Yhdistämällä hobitit nuoruudestaan asti kehittelemäänsä Keski-Maahan Tolkien loi suuren suosion saavuttaneen lastenkirjansa.
Kirjasta on tekeillä kolmiosainen elokuvahanke. Elokuvat ohjaa ja tuottaa menestyneen Taru sormusten herrasta -elokuvatrilogian ohjannut Peter Jackson. Elokuvatrilogian ensimmäinen osa on Odottamaton matka, joka sijoittuu Keski-Maahan 60 vuotta ennen Tarun sormusten herrasta tapahtumia. Elokuvassa Bilbo Reppuli päätyy eeppiselle matkalle kolmentoista kääpiön ja Gandalf-velhon kanssa. Thorin Tammikilven johtaman retkueen tavoitteena on vapauttaa Ereborin kääpiövaltakunta, jonka lohikäärme Smaug on kauan sitten valloittanut. Elokuvan ensi-ilta on Suomessa 12. joulukuuta 2012. John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, CBE (1892 – 1973) was an English writer, poet, philologist, and university professor, best known as the author of the classic high fantasy works The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion.
Tolkien was Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon at Pembroke College, Oxford, from 1925 to 1945 and Merton Professor of English Language and Literature there from 1945 to 1959. He was at one time a close friend of C. S. Lewis—they were both members of the informal literary discussion group known as the Inklings. Tolkien was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II on 28 March 1972.
After his death, Tolkien's son Christopher published a series of works based on his father's extensive notes and unpublished manuscripts, including The Silmarillion. These, together with The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings form a connected body of tales, poems, fictional histories, invented languages, and literary essays about a fantasy world called Arda, and Middle-earth within it. Between 1951 and 1955, Tolkien applied the term legendarium to the larger part of these writings.
While many other authors had published works of fantasy before Tolkien, the great success of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings led directly to a popular resurgence of the genre. This has caused Tolkien to be popularly identified as the "father" of modern fantasy literature — or, more precisely, of high fantasy. In 2008, The Times ranked him sixth on a list of "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945". Forbes ranked him the 5th top-earning dead celebrity in 2009.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is a 2012 epic fantasy film directed by Peter Jackson. It is the first of a three-part film adaptation of the novel The Hobbit (1937) by J. R. R. Tolkien, to be followed by The Desolation of Smaug and There and Back Again, due for theatrical release in 2013 and 2014, respectively.
Set sixty years before The Lord of the Rings, the story is about the hobbit Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), hired by the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) to accompany 13 dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) on a quest across Middle-earth to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from Smaug the dragon. The film premiered in New Zealand on 28 November 2012 and is scheduled for general release on 14 December 2012 at over 4,000 theaters.
