Geocache Description:

Sutherland Shire Cycleways – Eastern Trail for Beginners along the southern side of Botany Bay

Cache #25 – Captain Cooks Landing Place

This cycle trail is set up to introduce you to the diverse and yet intertwined natural and social landscape .

They often say life is about the journey, not the destination; but with geocaching, we say it’s both! With over 3 million geocaches around the world. The adventure begins with navigating to the geocache location, then there’s the big “ah-ha!” moment when you find the geocache! The journey doesn’t end there though, so we’re listing out five steps we recommend once you’ve made a find. Are you completing all five?

  1. Sign the logbook in the geocache. You should always carry a pen/pencil. Every Physical geocache has got a log and it’s just as important to sign the physical log as it is to post your log in the Geocaching® app. Signing the geocache log validates your visit! If you don't sign, then post a note till you return.
  2. Scenic view? Fun trail? Group shot? Take a photo to include with your log! Photos can be uploaded to your log right from the app. However NEVER add a spoiler. The next person should have the same experience.
  3. Log your find in the Geocaching® app! If you’re not logging your find in the field, save it as a draft and include a few notes about your journey to the geocache that you can use to jog your memory later. Remember to NOT include spoiler comments in your log!
  4. Give it a Favorite point! Premium members can award Favorite points to w-o-w geocaches to let other cachers know it’s something special.
  5. Place the geocache back where you found it so the next cacher can experience the same finders-joy! Remember to respect your surroundings, whether that’s flora, fauna, or others around enjoying the outdoors.
This four (4) WP Multi which will require stealth, some planning and time. Oh dear, numbers become letters and the maths becomes a part of the experience.
Things to think about.
Firstly, it is recommended that your adventure be started at or within ½ hour of low tide.
Secondly, you will require something to write on so that you can work out the coordinates for the following WP’s.
Thirdly, there is a container WP3 which it is large enough for swaps and contains the clue to get to WP4.
Fourthly, to reach WP 4 this cache could require someone to plug along as it is not designed for the sprinter.

WP1 – S 34 00.276 E 151 13.015
While here, you get to fully grasp the importance of European settlement on this land to England. This link will provide an understanding of what Captain Cooks achieved during that voyage.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Cook
At this location you are required to gather a date and a name. You will transpose the letters in name of the Midshipman mentioned into numbers and they will become a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h,i (do not repeat letters within a word). The day of the month will be j,k and the month (changed to a number) l.

WP2 = S 34 (g-a) (k-g) . (j) (i) (g-l) E 151 (f) . (l*j-i) ((d-c)*j) (j*c)
There are about 10 Memorials along the waterfront in the area which is now under the management of NSW National Parks, all remembering the discovery of Australia by the European’s.  Take the time to have a look at a few others. This one is of particular importance because it shows that the lands Cook was claiming in the name of England were taken from others and that he used force to make his landing.
At this plaque you will take the day m,n. and year o,p,q,r. These will help you get to WP3.

WP3 = S 34 (r) (a-(n+o)) . (l) (j-o) (m) E 151 (k-n) (n/l) . ((h-l)/m) (l*j+o) (h-b+n)
Here you will find a high muggle factor that you will need to consider (a camera, Binoculars or other disguise may help). However it is a great location to spend the time you will need to resolve the riddle that will take you to the final location so that you can sign the log.
There’s also pencils and a note pad for you to use if it helps. Remember that if you press to hard you may leave indentations that make it easy for those behind you and after going to all the effort you have gone to, you wouldn’t want to reduce the experience for others ……………… would you!
The container that is located here is large enough for trackable swaps. It is recommended that if you are leaving, swapping or moving trackables, you “write a note” in the web cache page and record your trackables at this time as it may be some time before you find and log your visit to the final location which is a micro which requires you to have your own writing implement.

WP4 = S 34 ??.??? E 151 ??.???
By now you have more than likely plugged your way from one end of the Sutherland Shire Cycleways – Eastern Trail Series to the other and to wherever this final location is and you are ready to collect your reward by signing the log.

Thank you for participating and learning a bit about the interaction between civilization (European and Indigenous) and the environment in this area.
