Localizada na costa sul da Ilha da Madeira a 18 Km do Funchal, é limitada a oeste pelo concelho da Calheta, a norte pelos concelhos de São Vicente e Porto Moniz, e a leste pelo concelho da Ribeira Brava.
O Seu Topónimo surge porque Gaspar Frutuoso refere que em 1420, João Gonçalves Zarco, em viagem de reconhecimento da costa da Madeira, atingiu uma ponta que entrava no mar e sobre a qual se avistava uma rocha que, de tão polida pela rebentação do mar, parecia iluminada pelo reflexo dos raios solares. Desta constatação lhe advém o nome de Ponta do Sol.
A extensão deste concelho viu-se reduzida ao longo dos anos. Em 1511, com a criação da vila da Calheta e em 1914, depois da criação do novo concelho da Ribeira Brava. Hoje, a sua área distribui-se por 3 freguesias: Canhas, Madalena do Mar e Ponta do Sol.
Located on the South coast of Madeira Island, 18 Km from Funchal, is bounded to the West by the municipality of Calheta, on the North by the municipalities of Porto Moniz and São Vicente, and on the East by the municipality of Ribeira Brava.
Its Name arises because Gaspar Frutuoso observes that in 1420, João Gonçalves Zarco, on recognition of the Madeira coast, hit a tip that went in the sea and on which they could see a rock, so polished by the waves of the sea, seemed illuminated by reflection of sunlight. This finding conferred the name of Ponta do Sol.
The extension of this municipality was reduced over the years. In 1511, with the creation of the village of Calheta and in 1914, after the creation of the new municipality of Ribeira Brava. Today, its area is distributed by 3 parishes: Canhas, Madalena do Mar and Ponta do Sol.

Capela de Santo António (Stage1):
Pequena capela rural construída provavelmente no século XVII e reconstruída no século XX. Mantém os traços da planta original, com uma sacristia adossada ao lado direito e um portal de arco pleno maneirista.
Parque Infante D. Henrique (Stage2):
Pequeno parque a oferecer belas vistas sobre o oceano e toda a região vizinha. Local florido muito agradável, com alguns bancos onde poderá descansar e apreciar a paisagem.
Igreja Matriz (Nossa Senhora da Luz - Stage 3):
Curiosamente dedicada a Nossa Senhora da Luz, pois foi edificada na Ponta do Sol. Não se sabe ao certo a data da sua construção, mas ela deve ter sido erguida em finais do Século XV. O importante povoador da localidade Rodrigues Anes, o Coxo, determinou, no seu testamento de 1486, que se fizesse uma capela na dita igreja de invocação do Espírito Santo. A capela chegou aos nossos dias mas com outra designação, a de Nossa Senhora do Patrocínio.

O Centro de Estudo John Dos Passos – um prédio construído na primeira metade do século XIX – está situado bem no coração da Ponta do Sol e constitui um “ex libris” do património edificado e histórico da vila, ao lado da igreja de Nossa Senhora da Luz, da Capela de São Sebastião e da Capela de Santo António. John Roderigo Dos Passos (Chicago, 14 de janeiro de 1896 — 28 de setembro de 1970) foi um novelista e pintor estadunidense, descendente de imigrantes portugueses originários da Madeira.
Cine Ponta do Sol (Stage 6):
Edifício construído em 1933 com características românticas. Imóvel que antigamente era conhecido também como o clube, pois reunia-se a aristocracia pontassolense para bailes, convívios, jogos e visionamento de películas.

Chapel of Santo António (Stage1):
Small rural chapel built probably in the 17th century and rebuilt in the 20th century. Maintains the original plant traits, with a vestry located near to the right side and a Mannerist arch portal.
Infante D. Henrique Park (Stage2):
Small park offering beautiful views of the ocean and the entire neighbouring region. Location very nice floral, with some banks where you can relax and enjoy the scenery.
Mother Church (Lady of the light - Stage 3):
Interestingly, dedicated to our Lady of light, because it was built on the edge of the Sun, no one knows for sure the date of its construction, but it must have been erected at the end of the 15th century. The important locale settler Rao Nsas, the lame, has determined, in his testament of 1486, who made a chapel in the Church of invocation of the Holy Spirit. The chapel came to the present day but with another name, that of our Lady of the sponsorship.

Center John dos Passos (Stage5):
The study center John Dos Passos – a building built in the first half of the 19TH century – is situated right in the heart of Ponta do Sol and is an "ex libris" the built heritage and history of the village, next to the Church of our Lady of light, the chapel of St. Sebastian and St. Anthony's Chapel. John Roderigo Dos Passos (born January 14, 1896 — September 28, 1970) was an American painter and novelist of Portuguese immigrants originating in Madeira.
Cine Ponta do Sol (Stage 6):
Building built in 1933 with romantic features. Property that was formerly known as the Club, because it met the aristocracy pontassolense for dances, gatherings, games and film viewing.
