Geocache Description:

Come join us just before christmas for a meet & greet in Port Elizabeth.

In 2006 we attended an Event by vespax
This is an exact repeat of that event only 5 year later, to the date and time of the original event. The 2006 listing can be seen here (GC17RBT)

Since Port Elizabeth is near the wonderful Addo Elephant Park and the event is taking place so close to Christmas, I thought it would be fun to have a geocaching "white elephant" event. What is a geocaching "white elephant" event you ask? Well, it is sort of an American tradition for parties held near Christmas that allows people to give and receive inexpensive gifts.

A quote from Wikipedia:
quote:

Initially, all of the wrapped gifts are placed onto a gift pile. Typically, the gifts are not labeled whom they are from, nor do they list a recipient. The first person (selected by some pre-determined method) chooses a gift from the gift pile, opens the gift for all to see, and keeps it for the time being. The next person, going counter clockwise, can either choose to take an unopened gift from the gift pile or steal a gift from any previous gift-opener. If an unopened gift is selected, the gift must be unwrapped. If at any time a person's gift is stolen, that person can immediately unwrap a new gift or steal another person's gift. This process repeats until a gift reaches "dead" status (see below) or until a person chooses to unwrap a new gift (as opposed to stealing a gift), at which point play proceeds to the next person. After all turns have been taken, the person who went first has the option of taking one more turn since this person had the disadvantage of not knowing what any of the now-opened presents were at the beginning of play. Owners of opened gifts must keep them visible for all to see and hold them up when requested.
We will have the geocaching theme for our white elephant. This means, attendees to the event are asked to bring "gifts" that can be traded in a cache, a new cache box ready to be placed, an unactivated travel bug or anything else that a geocacher would love to receive as a gift to cache with in 2008! Please, there is no need to break the bank, just something fun and that we can all receive a gift and get to know each other a little better. Note: I will bring a few extra gifts in case some feel they are can't bring and still want to participate in the exchange. The event will take place in the grass area of Happy Valley on Sunday afternoon. Let's make the time 2pm so we can all get back to families and activities that evening. Event should not last more than an hour, unless we want to hang out longer! Hope to see lots of gifts and smiling faces.
quote:

In a variant based in parts of central New Jersey, the gift is wrapped inside-out, so that the printed part of the wrapping paper is not visible to the recipient. The back of the wrapping paper, which is typically white, is what gives the gift the term "white elephant."
