Getting there
If you arrive by car and are in a hurry to get to the cache, turn off the road between Lengyel and Kurd at the listed trailhead waypoint. You will need to drive on a bumpy and winding forestry road for 4 kms. Drive carefully!
You may leave your car at the recommended parking coordinates or somewhere nearby. In order to reach the cache from here you will need to walk 300 m on the trail marked with a red L.
However, the best approach, in my opinion, is coming by bike. You may leave your car in any of the nearby villages: Lengyel, Kurd, Mucsi, Závod and complete a very pleasant circle, picking up some other caches on the way, such as Lengyel-Annafürdö and Závod Pilgrimage. There is an extended sytem of dirt roads at your disposal - of course, better to be used on dry days.
Description
I am inviting you to a little, hidden corner of the Tolnai-hegyhát area, to the site of the disappeared village of Papd. Only a chapel marks that there was a flourishing village here once. Papd was an old Hungarian settlement, consisting two parts, Lower-Papd (Alsópapd) and Upper-Papd (Felsöpapd), Lower-Papd being more populous. According to the Turkish tax record of 1552, 41 taxpayers lived in Lower-Papd, and only 7 in Upper-Papd.
By the end of the Turkish rule (1686) both villages were ruined, became uninhabited.
From about the 1720s the nearby villages (Mucsi, Závod, Lengyel) had new, German settlers. They regularly visited the ruins of the church of Lower-Papd for praying. From this time on the place was highly respected by the German population.
A chapel was built at the place of the church ruin in 1883, but it had to be demolished in 1930 due to its insufficient foundation. The current chapel was erected by the following year, and was sanctified on May 2, 1931 in the honor of Virgin Mary.
Pilgrims used to visit and hold service at the chapel on September 8th (the official feast of the chapel), at Pentecost, on the day of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (August 15th) and on other Virgin Mary-related days.
Nowadays, even people living in the area hardly know about the chapel.
