UM CASTANHEIRO DO TEMPO DOS DESCOBRIMENTOS PORTUGUESES
O castanheiro, é uma árvore de que se conhecem em Portugal, indivíduos, com vários séculos. Originário da Ásia, os Romanos trouxeram-no para a Península Ibérica. No nosso País, até ao inicio do século XX existiam enormes Soutos ou Castanhais, no Norte e Centro do território. Uma praga chamada 'tinta' dizimou milhares de castanheiros, o abandono dos proprietários fez o resto.
Na actualidade, tem sido feito um esforço na recuperação das árvores antigas e, no plantio de novas. Em Trás-os-Montes e na Beira Interior há outra vez grandes soutos, a produção de castanha aumentou, mas estamos longe do tempo em que se dizia 'o povo come madeira e terra', porque alimentação tinha por base, castanha pilada e batata. Em Sintra sempre abundaram, ainda hoje, subsiste uma artéria designada: Caminho dos Castanheiros nessa zona fica o vetusto exemplar motivo desta cache.
Seguindo o Caminho dos Frades, que começa junto à Sobreira dos Fetos, já referida neste 'sitio', chegamos à Quinta, em cujo muro é visível 'O CASTANHEIRO'. O tronco enorme, nodoso, retorcido, marcado com cicatrizes causadas pelo tempo e pelo homem provoca em quem o observa sentimentos de admiração e respeito devidos as coisas venerandas. Segundo consta já existia na época das descobertas. Se assim for, tem mais de 500 anos. Com esta idade, há um outro perto da Guarda ' o castanheiro de Guilhafonso'.
O 'Castanheiro de Sintra' é mais impressivo. Foi declarado árvore de interesse público conforme portaria publicada no Diário do Governo nº70, II série de 19/04/1945.
Como curiosidade: um dos maiores castanhais do Mundo está em Espanha, junto á fronteira com Portugal, entre Aroche e Aracena no caminho de Serpa para Sevilha, tem vários quilómetros de extensão. A partir de Novembro, merece uma visita porque, o tom da folhagem, proporciona uma visão única. Talvez por isso, no imaginário da antiga China, o castanheiro era associado ao OUTONO e ao OCIDENTE. Entre nós, como a castanha servia de alimento para o Inverno, simbolizava cautela e PREVIDÊNCIA.
Resta acrescentar, um facto histórico, pouco conhecido: o souto, agora em Espanha, foi território Português até D.Dinis o ter trocado pelas terras de Riba Coa, conforme Tratado de Alcanizes assinado em 1297. Á época, denominava-se ALGARVE ALTO, aquela região. Não se ganhou muito com a troca...
Vale a pena visitar SINTRA, só para admirar este CASTANHEIRO. Curiosamente, situa-se na Freguesia de São Martinho, Santo protector dos vinhos e dos magustos. Quantas castanhas deste 'velhinho' se consumiram para alegrar o Povo? Oxalá, o CASTANHEIRO vá resistindo.

CHESTNUT A TIME OF PORTUGUESE DISCOVERIES
The chestnut is a tree that is known in Portugal, individuals with several centuries. Originally from Asia, the Romans brought it to the Iberian Peninsula.
