Geocache Description:

Located in the forest grounds of the oldest inhabited castle in Ireland, Mulhagreelan wood is a therapeutic and relaxing experience where at the very top you reach what can only be described on a sunny day as 'paradise'. (great for a picnic)

Mullaghreelan wood is part of the old grounds of Kilkea Castle. An ancient rath sits on top of the hill and is associated with the kings of Leinster in ancient Irish manuscripts. It is also the birthplace of Saint Laurence O'Toole. There is a rare stand of coastal sequoia redwood (the tallest tree in the world) in Mullaghreelan.

Mullaghreelan is a beautiful mixed woodland with a good network of trails and is of great historical interest. A nature/heritage trail is put in place with ten stops of interest along the route. Information and maps can be found on www.coillteoutdoors.ie

Mullaghreelan wood is situated south east of Athy town on the Athy-Castledermot road (R418), 12 km from Athy and 2 km from Kilkea village.

2 ways to approach the cache...

one- (The approach from above using the track) = terrain 4 (not safe for kids, slippery and downhill on a mini cliff face)

second... terrain 2.5 - Go down the main avenue of trees, upon reaching the old metal gate walk back to the pace of 26 trees on your right.
Upon reaching the 26'th tree... Walk right in, keep walking till you reach the dark hidden part of the area, you will see a hanging mini cliff
(yup in the middle of the forest... I walk the dogs here every day and have never seen it before)  this is where you want to be looking, you will know it when you reach it as you are literally standing in a pit.

Thanks for checking it out, and in the enthusiastic words of GerLor... "Happy Hunting" !
