Geocache Description:

To log this cache you must send me an email: geocacherk57@gmail.com with the answers to the following questions: In your own words, how do you believe the rock wall was created? What is the height of the wall at the folds? What type of fold would you classify this as? If you would like to include a photo of your group at the site, feel free. Photos are always appreciated.

This is an Earth Cache. There is no container to be found. Instead, there is an Earth Science Lesson. To log this cache you must send me an email with the answers to the questions listed top and bottom of this cache listing. You can log your find any time after visiting the site, but I must receive your answers via email within two days of logging your find. You can park on the side of the nearby secondary road. Please, supervise children and pets while at the site.

On arriving at the posted coordinates, you will find yourself standing under a relatively newly constructed bridge. The rock wall facing you is the subject of this Earth Cache.

The crust of the Earth is in constant motion due to Continental Drift and Plate Tectonics. The movement is gradual and undetectable without delicate instrumentation. The exception is when an earthquake of sufficient magnitude occurs. When this movement takes place, there may be buckling and bending in the earth's crust.

The term fold is used in geology when one or a stack of originally flat surfaces, such as sedimentary rock, are bent or curved as a result of permanent deformation.

Folds in rocks vary in size from microscopic crinkles to mountain-sized folds. They occur as single folds and multiple folds of different sizes, on a variety of scales.

Folds form under varied conditions of stress, hydrostatic pressure, pore pressure, and temperature - hydrothermal gradient, as evidenced by their presence in all types of rock. They occur in soft sediments, the full spectrum of metamorphic rocks, and even as primary flow structures in some igneous rocks.

Three general types of folds can be distinguished:



Monoclines are folds in which horizontal or gently dipping beds are modified by simple step like bends.

Anticlines are strata arched upward with the limbs dipping away from the crest.

Synclines are down folds with the limbs dipping toward the center.

Overturned folds are tilted in one direction or the other. They are not concentric, in other words. Any combination of the above general types can be combined to form variants of any type.
