The history
During the War of 1812, the winter of 1813 was one of extreme cold and heavy snows. Between February and April, the 104th Regiment of Foot marched more than 1100 kilometres from Fredericton, New Brunswick to Kingston, Ontario to reinforce British troops and thwart an expected invasion by the Americans. This effort by a regiment of poorly clothed, frostbitten and hungry soldiers stands as an incredible feat in military history. This series commemorates the March of New Brunswick’s 104th and the locations where they manned forts, blockhouses, and outposts as well as some key personnel.

Une histoire authentiquement canadienne. Durant la guerre de 1812, l’hiver 1813 a été d’une rigueur extrême et a été marqué de nombreuses chutes de neige. De février à avril, le 104e Régiment d’infanterie a marché plus de 1100 kilomètres, de Fredericton, au Nouveau-Brunswick, à Kingston, en Ontario, pour prêter main-forte aux troupes britanniques et bloquer une invasion projetée par les Américains. Cette épreuve, réalisée par un régiment de soldats pauvrement vêtus, souffrant de la froidure et rongés par la faim, marque un exploit remarquable dans les annales militaires. Cette collection commémore le marche de Regiment du Nouveau Brunswick 104e et les emplacements où ils les forts maniés, les blockhaus, et les postes avancés de même que du personnel clé.

This cache location
Fort Hughes was built in 1780 as an outpost of Fort Howe to protect the masting trade, to act as a forward base for the couriers along the Grand Communications Route to Quebec and to keep a watchful eye on the Planter settlers of the Maugerville area who had just rebelled in support of the American Revolution. It was garrisoned by soldiers of New Brunswick’s 104th Regiment of Foot, while they were still His Majesty’s New Brunswick Regiment of Fencible Infantry, from about 1803 until 1805 when the post was abandoned. With the establishment of the blockhouse at Fredericton Junction, it was not reactivated when the War of 1812 started.

Le fort Hughes a été construit en 1780 pour servir d’avant-poste au fort Howe et, ainsi, protéger le commerce du mâtage et servir de base avancée aux messagers qui parcouraient la « grande route de communication » vers Québec. Le fort Hugues permettait aussi de surveiller de près les colons-planteurs de la région de Maugerville qui venaient de se rebeller en appui à la Révolution américaine. De 1803 à 1805, année où le fort est abandonné, la garnison se composait de soldats du 104e Régiment de fantassins du Nouveau-Brunswick, qui faisaient alors encore partie du New Brunswick Regiment of Fencible Infantry. Un blockhaus ayant été construit à Fredericton Junction, le fort Hughes n’a pas été remis en service quand la guerre de 1812 a éclaté.
