Poço da Arruda

A cache fica localizada na Baía da Arruda. O nome deriva duma planta chamada arruda e utilizada em tempos idos como erva medicinal.

Antes da construção do Porto de São João, esta baía foi usada como varadouro de pequenos barcos de pesca.

Nos dias de hoje o principal marco histórico é o poço de maré, ainda em uso cerca de cinquenta anos atrás, até os furos artesianos terem sido perfurados e a água canalizada. A água era transportada à cabeça em potes ou cântaros, normalmente por mulheres, por uma escadaria rudimentar com 365 degraus, a qual ainda hoje existe.

Havia então uma permanente falta de água para uso doméstico e outros fins, e o único recurso disponível foi a construção de poços de maré à volta da ilha do Pico, vários por freguesia, sempre que possível em solo arenoso, para melhor filtragem do sal e outras impurezas, mantendo a água um variável grau de salinidade, isto é, era sempre salobra.

The cache is located in Arruda Bay. The name derives from a plant called arruda and utilized formerly as a medicinal herb.

Before the construction of São João port, it was used as a beaching place for small fishing boats.

Nowadays the main historical feature is a tidal well, still used fifty years ago. The water was carried mainly by women, in pots or jugs on their heads, all the way up through a rough stairway counting 365 steps, which still exists today.

Until fifty years ago, before the artesian wells had been drilled and water piped, there was a permanent shortage of this liquid for domestic use and other purposes, and the only resource available was the construction of tidal wells around Pico island, several in every village, in sandy soil, when feasible, for a better filtration of salt and other impurities, having the water a various degree of salinity, that is, it was always a brackish water.
