This is the place where you can leave the hotel room keys you forgot to turn in when you checked out.
Once upon a time when hotel room keys were actual keys, if you forgot to leave your key in the room or at the desk you could drop it in any mailbox. There was enough information on the tag for the post office to deliver the key back to the hotel and receive postage. It was not a small expense for the hotel to cut a new key and even, for security reasons, to change the lock.
Now, however, virtually all hotels and motels use the plastic credit card type keys with the magnetic strip. It is not important to the hotel if you return the key or not. Once you check out, the key is invalidated. To create a new one is of minimal expense. Besides, there is likely to be an ad or a coupon for a local restaurant or other place on the card that the hotel and the advertiser would be happy for you to visit.
So, knowing this, we are lax in leaving the cards and take them home. Depending on how much we travel and our propensity for not throwing anything away the cards accumulate. Not to worry:
Pack up your cards and know that there is a nice retirement home for them. They are assured of not being thrown away and of not being reused. And you will feel good about doing something nice. Can you imagine, in their relaxed retirement, what stories they could tell each other!?
