Geocache Description:

St Mary's Church, Lower Sundon

I have brought you to this lovely church as it is well worth a visit.
It is situated on a very busy country road with sharp bends so take care with little ones.
The given coordinates are for parking outside the church which is limited.

The Church of St Mary is in the hamlet of Lower Sundon. The hamlet was established before
1066 and the church built in the thirteenth century.
It is a lovely church architecturally in the ‘decorated’ style with perpendicular chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, south chapel or transept and a western tower with one bell. There are stone seats round the north aisle and partly round the south aisle.
The roof of the church was blown off in the grand storm of 1880 and was closed until 1883. It deteriorated and was closed again in 1913. The church was then renovated and opened again in 1938.

There is rumour that the villagers deserted Lower Sundon during the plague and moved up the hill to Upper Sundon but there seems to be no historical record of this. Upper Sundon is larger and has the amenities.

The church and grounds are well looked after so please be respectful in the church and grounds.

The cache is a black magnetic 35mmfilm canister, only containing a log. You will need to bring your own writing implement.

To find the cache you will need to find a pleasant scented seat round a tree stump (covered in Honeysuckle) and sit there to peruse the clues.

The cache is OUTSIDE the church grounds.
