[SV] Vid Färjsundet har mycket hänt genom tiderna. En gång i tiden tjänade platsen som Ålands avrättningsplats. Ända sedan 1500-talet eller ännu tidigare har här funnits en färja i form av roddbåt och handdriven eller maskindriven vajerfärja. Själva färjeturen var inte det farligaste utan att ta sig upp eller ner för den slingriga och branta vägen till eller från färjan.
Söder om Färjsundet utkämpades Godbyslaget under inbördeskriget 1918. De vita segrade och ute på isen vid Färjsundet strax utanför den plats där det idag finns oljecisterner avrättades fem tillfångatagna rödgardister kallblodigt. Sedan 1968 finns en minnessten (vid Reference Point 1) över de döda rödgardisterna strax nedanför caféet "Uffe på berget".
1937 byggdes den bro som idag möjliggör en smidig cykel- eller bilfärd genom landskapet. Medan bron renoverades 1980-1981 fick resande ta den långa omvägen förbi Hagaslätten i Saltvik. Tunneln är den enda på Åland. När du är på plats på sommaren, passa på att ta en fika på caféet på berget och bestig tornet där en magnifik utsikt utlovas.
Cachen hittas enklast genom att gå in i skogen vid minnesstenen (Reference Point 1) och sedan följa GPSen till lådan. Men var försiktig! Gå inte för nära stupen. Det finns inte skyddsstängsel vid stupen nära intill. Lådan ligger dock flera meter ifrån stupen. Utsätt dig inte för onödiga risker, det behövs inte!
[EN] Throughout the times much has happened at the Färjsundet. Once a time the place served as Ålands execution site. From the 16th century or even earlier here has been a ferry in the forms of a rowing boat and hand- or machine operated cable ferries. The ferry ride was not the most dangerous part for travellers but to getting up or down the steep serpentine path to and from the ferry.
South of the Färjsundet the small Battle of Godby was fought during the civil war 1918. The white won the battle and out on the ice at Färjsundet right next to the place where the oil tanks are today, five red captured prisoners from the battle were coldly executed. Since 1968 there is a memorial stone (at Reference Point 1) over the dead red soldiers right beneath the café "Uffe på berget" (Uffe on the hill).
1937 the bridge was built that enables a smooth bike- or cartrip through the landscape. While the bridge was renovated during 1980-1981 travellers had to take the long detour through the Haga plain in Saltvik. The tunnel is the only one on Åland. While you are here on the summer, take the opportunity and take a coffee at the café at the hill and climb the tower where a magnificent view is promised.
The easiest way to find the cache is to go into the forest at the memorial stone (Reference Point 1) and then follow the GPS to the cache. But be careful! Don't get to close to the steeps. There are no fences at the steeps. The cache is however several meters from the steeps. Don't put yourself into unneccesary risks, because that is not necessary!
