Pored povaljske zupne crkve nalaze se ostaci najveće ranokršćanske bazilike na otoku Braču iz šestog stoljeća. Do danas je sačuvan vjeran tlocrt s predvorjem, portalom, svetištem, krsnim zdenvem, te u potpunosti kasnoantička krstionica, s ostacima fresaka i kapitulom. Na preostalim zidinama srušene baziliki benediktinci su u 11. stoljeću podigli čuveni samostan a krstionicu su koristili kao crkvu. Na nadvratniku svoje crkve upisali su 1184. god. povrat dobara a na pergamenti popis samostanskih zemalja. Ti su spomenici poznati u znanosti kao "Povaljski prag" i "Povaljska listina" i u samim su temeljima hrvatske pismenosti. Kada su benediktinci napustili Povlja a Turci s kopna vršili prepade na Brač, unutar bazilike sagradjena je u 16. stoljeću mletačka obrambena utvrda koja i danas pored zupne crkve dominira na ovom prostoru.

Neben der Kirche von Povlja befinden sich die Ruinen der größten frühchristlichen Basilika auf der Insel Brač aus dem 6. Jahrhundert. Bis heute blieb der ursprüngliche Grundriss mit dem Hof, Portal, Altar und Taufbecken erhalten. Die Taufkapelle aus der Spätantike mit den Resten der Fresken und der Kapitelsaal blieben im Ganzen erhalten. Auf den übriggebliebenen Mauern der zerstörten Basilika ließen die Benediktiner im 11. Jhnt. ein Kloster bauen, wobei die Taufkapelle als Kirche diente. Am Architrav ihrer Kirche schrieben sie im Jahre 1184 die Rückgabe der Güter und auf dem Pergamentpapier die Liste der Klostergüter auf. In der Fachliteratur sind diese Denkmäler als das "Portal von Povlja" und die "Schrift von Povlja" bekannt und gehören zu den Grundlagen der kroatischen Schrift. Als die Benediktiner Povlja verließen und die Türken vom Festland die Insel Brač angriffen, wurde im 16. Jhnt. innerhalb der Basilika die venezianische Festung errichtet, die heute noch neben der Kirche den Komplex dominiert.

Near the parish church of Povlja, there are the remains of the largest Early Christian basilica on the island of Brač from the 6th century. The authentic ground plan including vestibule, portal, sanctuary, baptismal font, and the lLate Antique baptistery, with the remains of frescoes and the chapter house, has been preserved up to the present. The famous monastery was built by the Benedictines on the remaining walls of the ruined basilica, while the baptistery was used as a church. The restitution was registered above the portal of the church in 1184 and the land property was recorded on the parchment paper. These monuments are famous among scientists as "Povaljski prag" and "Povaljska listina" and they are considered to be the foundation of the Croation literacy. When the Benedictines had finally left Povlja and the Turks carried out surprise attacks from the main land, the Venetian fortress was built within the basilica in the 16th century, still dominating this area next to the parish church.
