Ce monument en bronze représentait un groupe de combattants français et africains, unis dans une scène glorieuse autour d’un drapeau français porté par un officier blanc, selon la représentation habituelle de la force noire dans l’immédiat d’après-guerre. Il fut inauguré en 1924 avec le concours de 500 exécutants indigènes qui participèrent alors à un grand défilé historique de l’armée coloniale.
En septembre 1940, le monument fut démantelé par les nazis, à la fois pour raisons raciales et pour récupérer l’immense quantité de bronze. Elevé ici sur le lieu historique du premier monument, ce deuxième monument aux morts aux héros de l’Armée Noire consiste aujourd’hui en un simple obélisque blanc.

Here in 1924, a 7m high monument was erected, a work by the sculptor Moreau-Vauthier, in testament to Reims’ gratitude to the African soldiers who defended the city in 1918.
This bronze monument represented a group of French and African soldiers, united in a glorious scene around a French flag carried by a white officer, which is how the black army was usually represented in the immediate post-war period. It was inaugurated in 1924 during a show of 500 indigenous performers who participated in a great historical march of the colonial army. In September 1940, the monument was dismantled by the Nazis, both for racial reasons and to recover the immense amount of bronze. Erected here on the historical site of the first monument, this second memorial to the fallen heroes of the Black Army today takes the form of a simple white obelisk. Some metres from there, in the Parc de Champagne itself, a third monument has stood since the autumn of 2013, which you are thoroughly encouraged to go and see, and which is artistically very close to the first monument lost in 1940 – Memorial to the Heroes of the Black Army Geocache #2.
