Geocache Description:

St Luke's Chapel Stone is a grade II listed building set in the tree rich grounds of the Old Stone house Hospital.

Stone house Hospital was London's Mental asylum between mid nineteenth Century and early 21st Century. St Luke's Chapel was built in 1901. In 1887 the commissioners of lunacy decreed that chapels in asylums must be detatched from the main hospital buildings. The former Chapel was converted into a recreation hall with a stage. In 2008 the Chapel was given a grade II listing status as were most of the hospital buildings as they were thought to be the most complete example of a Victorian Hospital.

In 2006 an Arboricultural Report was conducted on the grounds of Stone House hospital. It highlighted 16 individuals of Grade A trees and 61 individuals of Grade B trees. There were also many examples of Grade C and R trees. "Many large mature trees have amenity, landscape and high biodiversity value and some necessitate careful protection. The species of the trees on the site varies from Red Oaks to Horse Chestnut to Poplars and Sycamores as well as Maples and Cherry amongst others"

Many of the trees found in the old hospital grounds (Like the old Joyce Green site) are not native to the British Isles eg the Red Oak.
