El Valle del río Torete presenta una especial concentración de atalayas islámicas en lo que fue una línea de defensa-ataque musulmán que uniría Medinaceli con Gormaz y San Esteban de Gormaz en el siglo X. Tierras estas de múltiples incursiones musulmanas y ataques cristianos durante las campañas de ambos contendientes.
La atalaya islámica de La Ojaraca levantada en el siglo X se comunica visualmente con la fortaleza califal de Gormaz , el castillo de Berlanga de Duero , y con la atalaya de La Veruela ( en la ladera de enfrente ) .Tiene una altura de unos 7, 5 metros .
Actualmente se encuentra semiderruida habiéndose desplomado verticalmente la mitad de la atalaya, probablemente por causa de un rayo .
Para la ascensión a la atalaya recomiendo una excursión muy gratificante desde Bordecorex ( ver mapa abajo ):
Entre ida y vuelta el recorrido es de unos 5, 5 kms.
Nada mas salir del pueblo un camino a la izquierda conduce hacia unos campos de cultivo que hay que travesar. Al llegar a la falda de la ladera un estrecho camino nos enfila con un leve zigzagueo a la llanura superior. Desde ahí solo hay que seguir la cuerda por el filo de la ladera hasta la Atalaya . Es fácil divisar fauna salvaje si se va en silencio ( corzos especialmente, y buitres al atardecer posándose en un par de viejas encinas en la ladera justo enfrente de Bordecorex) . Esta ruta permite observar el principio del valle del río Torete desde arriba , y también se divisan la Sierra de Ayllon al sur , y la Sierra de Urbión al norte .
El cielo del crepúsculo nos brinda una visión espectacular desde la atalaya.

The Torete River Valley has a particular concentration of Islamic watchtowers which are part of a Muslim defense-attack line joining Medinaceli with Gormaz and San Esteban de Gormaz in the X century, as this was a land of multiple Muslim and Christian incursions during war campaigns.
The Islamic watchtower La Ojaraca built in the X century has visual contact with the Gormaz Caliphate fortress , the Berlanga de Duero castle , and the watchtower La Veruela (on the opposite hill). The tower is 7, 5 meters high. It collapsed vertically , likely because of a ray , and only a half-ruined tower remains.
To reach the spot I recommend a very rewarding hike from the village of Bordecorex (see map above). It will take about 2 hours in a 5,5 kms round trip:
just outside the village take a trail to the left that crosses farming fields . After leaving these fields we arrive at the foot of the slope , from where a narrow path in slight zigzag reaches the plains above . Up there in the plains just follow the rope over the edge of the slope until the watchtower. It is easy to spot wildlife if you walk silently (especially deer and vultures at sunset as they land on a couple of old oaks trees on the hillside opposite Bordecorex). This route allows a fantastic view of the Torete River valley from above, and also the Ayllon ridge to south and the Urbión mountains to the north can be seen along the hike.
The twilight provides spectacular sky views from the watchtower, as shown in the pictures above.
