Le Puy de Wolf n'est ni un volcan ni un terril : c'est un morceau du manteau terrestre qui est remonté des fonds de l'Océan puis s'est déplacé par les mouvements tectoniques jusqu'à son emplacement actuel lors de la formation du Massif Central il y a environ 350 millions d'années. Le Puy de Wolf est constitué d'une roche rare qui est par nature peu adaptée aux plantes : c'est pourquoi les pentes du Puy de Wolf accueillent des plantes rares voire endémiques.

The hill of Wolf is neither a volcano nor a coal tip : it's a piece of the ground coat which raised from the funds of the Ocean then moved by the tectonic movements up to its current location during the formation of Massif Central approximately 350 million years ago. The hill of Wolf is constituted by a rare rock which is little adapted to plants : that is why the slopes of the hill of Wolf welcome even endemic rare plants.
