Sous les falaises de la Pouncho d'Agast existent deux grottes bien connues des Millavois. L'une sur le versant du Tarn, baptisée Grotte du Hibou, voir la cache n° GC25VQK de Playmobil 05. L'autre sur le versant de la Dourbie, d'accès et de pénétration difficile baptisée Grotte des Faux Monnayeurs.
En 1930, alors que la cavité était presque oublié de tous, des chasseurs voient s'enfuir par là leur gibier. Parmi eux, Bob Galzin a qui l’animal lui indiquât l'étroit boyau. N'ayant pas de nom, La grotte fut baptisée « grotte des Faux-Monnayeurs » par Louis Balsan en 1931, suite à la découverte dans le fond de cette dernière d'un véritable atelier avec des restes de fabrications (déchets de cuivre), des signatures de faussaires sur les parois et des fausses monnaies sur le sol (daté entre 1655 et 1667) frappées sur des flans de même diamètre que les monnaies authentiques.
Pour s'y rendre, il faut prendre la D 110, en direction du Causse. Au niveau de la 5ème épingle, il faut suivre le sentier qui longe la falaise, qui passe par la grotte du Hibou, sur 1,3 km environ, suivre le balisage jaune. Ensuite, le sentier descend sur la droite pour traverser, de haut en bas, la falaise. La cavité se trouve sur cette portion de sentier très raide. L’entrée de la grotte se situe à gauche du sentier, à environ 5 mètres sur une banquette calcaire. L'ouverture est petite (0.8x0.6cm) et l'accès difficile. Il faut passer sous une arche et continuer a droite, là entrez dans l’étroiture, montez, passez le double coude, c’est la partie la plus étroite, et enfin rampez sur une grosse douzaine de mètres. Vous êtes arrivé. Une grande salle s’offre à vous, environ 60 m de long, lieux de travail des faussaires. On prétend qu'en cas de forte pluie un lac s'y formerait. Cette large salle est bien concrétionnée, même si elle a beaucoup perdu de son prestige depuis que des personnes indélicates sectionnent les stalactites et les emportent. Cette salle où l'on voit une table de pierre et deux cratères (traces de fouilles) est sans danger particulier. Sur le fond de la grande salle à gauche un couloir fait suite à celle-ci et se termine par un puits de 5 mètres colmaté par un éboulis. Le développement total est de 100 mètres.
Les faux monnayeurs avaient là un refuge de premier ordre pour leurs manœuvres criminelles, car l'accès en était interdit aux personnes légèrement corpulentes et c'est toute une acrobatie d'y pénétrer. Une question se pose : qui étaient ces faux monnayeurs ? A cette question, la grotte donna la réponse. Louis Balsan ne put s'empêcher de cacher son émotion lorsqu'il put lire, gravés sur les parois de la grotte, les noms des audacieux : les Brunet, les Dumas, les Restavaud, les Recoules, les Téroide, les Tolose, les Vacquier, qui ne craignirent pas de marquer leur passage et même de le dater (deux dates sont inscrites : 1635 et 1649), bien qu'ils connussent le châtiment qui les attendait s'ils étaient pris : le bûcher ou la potence. Depuis, malheureusement les noms gravés sur la paroi ont été rayés, raturés comme en témoigne la photo que j'ai prise, et on ne peut plus discerner les signatures d'époques avec celles trompeuses d'aujourd'hui.
Attention aux enfants le sentier est en bordure de falaise.
