Back to the History #1

Back to the History - Kremnica #1

Flag SK

V 14. a 15. storočí sa vyťažilo v Kremnici 400 kg zlata ročne, čo znamenalo tretinu celej produkcie zlata v Uhorsku a desatinu celosvetovej produkcie zlata.

Back to the History - Kremnica #1

Archaeological finds confirmed that mining activity in surroundings of Kremnica goes back to the end of first and the beginning of the second millenium and there is evidence about of people in this area even before the emergence of Christianity.

First written evidence about Kremnica is from 1328 when hungarian king Charles I.(Charles Robert, or Caroberto) from House of Anjou granted status of the royal mining and minting town to the mining village of Cremnychbana based on the letter from 17-th november 1328.

St.Catherine became the patron saint of the town and the church in castle area was built and consecrated in her name. In Kremnica were minted gold ducats known as Florins that were well-know by their purity as well as silver Denars. Kremnica Mint operates continuously from its foundation until this day.

In the 14th and 15th centuries the average production of gold in Kremnica was 400kg annually representing a third of all gold production in hungarian kingdom and about a tenth of world production.

In the 16th and 17th centuries there was a gradual decline in production of gold in Kremnica due to exhaustion of surface deposits and also a great fire hit the town in 1560, when the castle was burnt and as well as a third of the town.

In the following centuries there were attempts to restore gold production, but then again there was a decline that continued until the 20th century when at the early seventies the mining was ceased in the area.

What attracts people to our little town now is neither gold, nor silver anymore, but the colourful history and interesting cultural and sporting events such as Kremnica Castle Organ, Kremnica gags, Music under the diamond vaulting, or Biela stopa.

Tasks

1.

As usually at this series we are looking for the place from where the picture above was taken. At the place look around well. There is an old miner house typical for this area at the background of the picture. There is another one near by with house number on the plate in the following form: ABC/DE

2.

There are staues of saints in four windows of a little chappell-belfry and we need to find out the information about the saint that you see in little window when you look from the old miner house at the picture.
